Reaching the knockout stages of a World Cup<\/a> is an achievement in itself – but for some of the tournament’s most important players, the battle to stay on the pitch is about to become just as important as the battle to win it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

FIFA’s suspension rules at the 2026 World Cup mean that any player who accumulates two yellow cards before the semi-final stage will automatically serve a one-match ban – and with the tournament now entering its most intense and physically demanding phase, the risk of picking up bookings rises sharply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The good news for players already carrying a yellow card is that all cautions are wiped clean before the semi-finals – meaning nobody enters the final four of the tournament carrying the threat of suspension. The danger window runs specifically across the Round of 32, the Round of 16 and the quarter-finals, where a second booking in any of those three rounds triggers an automatic one-game ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For managers, that creates a genuine selection and tactical headache. Do you rein in a key midfielder who plays on the edge? Do you substitute a booked defender before he gives away a second? And which players should you know about heading into the next round of fixtures?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is every player currently sitting on a yellow card at the 2026 World Cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Suspension risks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Canada<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Canada<\/a> head into their Round of 16 game against Morocco with two players carrying yellow cards. Both Nathan Saliba<\/strong> and Niko Sigur<\/strong> were cautioned in the win against South Africa and will need to avoid a further booking to play any part in a prospective quarter-final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Morocco<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Morocco<\/a> will take on co-hosts, Canada, knowing that only one player runs the risk of missing out on their potential quarter-final match against France or Paraguay. Issa Diop<\/strong> picked up his booking just two minutes into the second-half against Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paraguay<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Paraguay<\/a> have more people on bookings than any other nation heading into the Round of 16. Not all of them are players, however. Both Andres Cubas<\/strong> and Matias Galarza<\/strong> were booked for fouls during the match but head coach, Gustavo Alfaro<\/strong>, was also shown a yellow card during extra time. The rules apply for members of the back room staff as they do for the players, so any further bookings will result in a ban for Alfaro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

France<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

France<\/a> came through their win over Sweden unscathed, with no players seeing their name taken by the referee. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brazil<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Brazil<\/a> saw two players cautioned in their battle against Japan, with Danilo <\/strong>booked for an elbowing and Casemiro <\/strong>shown a yellow for a cynical foul. Both would be big misses for Brazil if they were to progress. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Norway<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Antonio Nusa<\/strong> is the only player within the Norwegian<\/a> squad that picked up a booking against Senegal. The forward was cautioned for a foul just six minutes after scoring his crucial goal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mexico<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Mexico<\/a> played out their victory over Ecuador without any of their players picking up a booking. They’ll be aiming to continue their remarkable run of form and will have a full squad to pick from if they do make the quarter-final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

England<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Only one player was shown a yellow card in England<\/a>‘s hard-fought victory over DR Congo and it was certainly a key one. Jude Bellingham<\/strong> was booked within the first 20 minutes of the game for a trip. If England progress, and he’s shown another yellow, he’d be a huge miss for the Three Lions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Portugal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The only Portuguese<\/a> player to be booked in their win against Croatia was central defender, Ruben Dias<\/strong>. The Manchester City player was booked for elbowing the first half and would be a big loss to the Portuguese backline if he were to find his way into the referee’s book again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spain<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Spain<\/a> didn’t pick up any booking in their comprehensive win over Austria and carry a clean bill of health heading into their Round of 16 tie against Portugal<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United States<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

United States<\/a> players weren’t shown any yellow cards during their victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina but they were, crucially, shown a red card. Three-goal striker, Folarin Balogun<\/strong>, was shown a red card for a serious foul and will miss the Round of 16 tie against Belgium. If United States come through that game, he’ll be available again for the quarter-final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belgium<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Brandon Mechele<\/strong> was the only Belgian<\/a> player to be booked in their comeback victory over Senegal. He isn’t the only member of the Belgian squad to be at risk of suspension, however. Head coach Rudi Garcia<\/strong> was shown a yellow card late on in the game and knows he can’t risk another booking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Switzerland<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Switzerland<\/a> reached this point by beating Algeria 2-0 and they came through that game without picking up any yellow cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colombia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Colombia<\/a> came through their Round of 32 match with Ghana but picked up two yellow cards along the way. Both Jhon Arias<\/strong>, the man who scored the winner for Colombia, and Richard Rios<\/strong> were cautioned and will need to avoid further sanctions against Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Argentina<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Argentina<\/a>‘s epic Round of 32 encounter against Cape Verde was not for the faint of heart but bookings were at a premium. Gonzalo Montiel<\/strong> was the only Argentinian player to be shown a yellow card, with the defender cautioned deep into extra time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Egypt<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Egypt<\/a> got though 90 minutes against Australia without picking up a yellow card but extra-time proved to be a different proposition. Both Haissem Hassan<\/strong> and Yasser Ibrahim<\/strong> were booked in the added 30 minutes and will now need to be wary in the Round of 16.<\/p>\n\n\n
