Paul Scholes believes the makers and shakers at Manchester United should attempt to lure either Thomas Tuchel or Antonio Conte to Old Trafford.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Red Devils endured another unsettling night on Tuesday as Atletico Madrid eliminated them from the Champions League last-16, meaning they’ve only made the quarter-finals twice now since their appearance in the 2011 final.<\/p>\n

Criticism was naturally dished out across the board in the immediate aftermath of Diego Simeone’s 2-1 aggregate triumph, but the spotlight has intensified on the man in the dugout, with further question marks dominating the narrative of Ralf Rangnick.<\/p>\n

As it stands, Man Utd are out of all cup competitions and are lagging behind in the Premier League title race, so a trophy-less season looks very much on the cards, barring a miraculous, almost unprecedented collapse from current table-toppers Manchester City and<\/em> Liverpool.<\/p>\n

Scholes, who won 11 Premier League titles during his playing days for Man Utd, doesn’t actually believe his former club are too far away from seriously competing for major silverware, but he believes their Achilles heel is in the technical area.<\/p>\n

Speaking on BT Sport, Scholes said: “I would go for Conte or Tuchel now possibly. He might be available at the end of the year.<\/p>\n

“They are two are top class coaches, who I think strike fear into players, and win, that’s the most important thing.<\/p>\n

“Either one of them will make this squad a lot better. OK, they need additions, but people are saying they need four or five by spending \u00a3200m or whatever it is.<\/p>\n

Man Utd’s European exit now means they will go a fourth successive season without silverware, with their last trophy coming under Jose Mourinho in 2017, a campaign in which the current Roma boss delivered the League Cup, the Europa League and the Community Shield.<\/p>\n

Scholes continued: “I think Man Utd are a top class coach away from getting back to anything near where they should be.<\/p>\n

“You look at the group of players, it’s not that bad, there are some good players.<\/p>\n

“Talented players, but for the last two years, maybe even longer they’ve not had an elite coach.<\/p>\n

“To be an elite coach of a big football club, you need to have special qualities, and you need to be able to get a team to be able to play how you want them to play.”<\/p>\n

Tuchel has emerged as a leading candidate to take the reins at Old Trafford following the growing crisis currently unfolding behind the scenes at Chelsea, though he is certainly not the only name to sprout up in the conversation.<\/p>\n
