{"id":1234542,"date":"2021-11-23T13:04:53","date_gmt":"2021-11-23T13:04:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/?p=1234542"},"modified":"2021-11-23T13:04:53","modified_gmt":"2021-11-23T13:04:53","slug":"pau-torres-villarreal-tottenham-hotspur-reject","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/news\/pau-torres-villarreal-tottenham-hotspur-reject\/","title":{"rendered":"Pau Torres explains Tottenham transfer snub in the summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres has given the reason why he rejected a summer transfer move to Tottenham Hotspur.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 16-capped Spain international was heavily linked with a move away from the Estadio de la Ceramica after helping Unai Emery&#8217;s men win the Europa League at the backend of last season.<\/p>\n<p>A host of Premier League clubs were heavily linked with his signature and it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2021\/nov\/22\/villarreals-pau-torres-its-not-normal-that-a-club-from-such-a-small-town-does-so-well\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">believed<\/a> Spurs <span>offered \u20ac60m to Villarreal, on top of a wage package that is said to <\/span><span>be four times what he currently earns at the Valencian club.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"FM22 Wonderkids | The best young players you&#039;ve (probably) never heard of | Football Manager 2022\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OSjU-rXPaB0?start=126&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>However, the 24-year-old was enticed by the chance to lead out his boyhood club for Champions League nights this season, a result of their Europa League success, and says <span>Villarreal&#8217;s chairman didn&#8217;t put any pressure on him to leave, despite the lucrative offer on the table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pull of playing the Champions League with the team from my town was bigger,\u201d he told <em>The Guardian<\/em>. \u201cI was clear from the start.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is only the fourth time Villarreal reached the Champions League, which shows how hard it is and it was a dream to play the competition with my lifelong club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president didn\u2019t put pressure on me, even though they could make a lot of money. He always said \u2018the decision\u2019s yours\u2019, that he\u2019d respect it. I appreciate that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I could experience with the club was unrepeatable. I\u2019m comfortable in my town, with my close people, and the group we have and the people we signed \u2013 [Arnaut] Danjuma, Boulaye [Dia], Gerard [Moreno] renewed. I\u2019m enjoying it. It\u2019s a special year, the group is very close, that\u2019s why I stayed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>On the potential of a future move to the Premier League, Torres added: \u201cWell, I still have a contract with various years left [until 2024].<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought about what was best for me in the present. I really wanted to play this competition with Villarreal \u2013 you don\u2019t know when that opportunity will come again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s see how far we can go.
