{"id":1132970,"date":"2020-02-22T19:50:27","date_gmt":"2020-02-22T19:50:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/?p=1132970"},"modified":"2020-02-22T19:53:20","modified_gmt":"2020-02-22T19:53:20","slug":"stoke-terminate-giannelli-imbula-contract-club-record-signing","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/news\/stoke-terminate-giannelli-imbula-contract-club-record-signing\/","title":{"rendered":"Stoke release 29-word statement confirming Giannelli Imbula&#8217;s departure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Stoke City have confirmed they have terminated the contract of their club record-signing Giannelli Imbula.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The midfielder joined Stoke from Porto in 2016 for around \u00a318.3m but has not featured for the club since March 2017, spending the past three years out on loan.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Imbula&#8217;s Stoke nightmare: Five things to know&#8230;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Giannelli Imbula joined Stoke from Porto in January 2016.<\/li>\n<li>He started every game until the end of the 2015\/16 season.<\/li>\n<li>However, disciplinary issues on and off the pitch meant he quickly fell out of favour.<\/li>\n<li>He joined Toulouse on loan in 2017 before spells in Spain and Italy.<\/li>\n<li>Lecce, his most recent club, cut his loan spell short last week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"background-color: transparent; display: block; padding: 0; max-width: 700px;\" title=\"Audioboom player\" src=\"https:\/\/embeds.audioboom.com\/posts\/7510326\/embed\/v4?image_option=fullsq\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Spells with Toulouse and Rayo Vallecano preceded a loan at Lecce this season, with Imbula making just four appearances for the Italian club across all competitions.<\/p>\n<p>However, that loan was terminated on Friday by mutual consent with Lecce releasing a very brief statement, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uslecce.it\/news\/243099143686\/risoluzione-consensuale-con-imbula\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saying<\/a>: &#8220;The US Lecce announces that it has consensually terminated the contractual relationship with the footballer Giannelli Imbula.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And just a day later, Stoke announced the termination of his contract with the club despite Imbula having 18 months left on the deal, mirroring Lecce with a very short statement.<\/p>\n<p>The 29-word message <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stokecityfc.com\/news\/2020\/february\/Giannelli-Imbula\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">read<\/a>: &#8220;Stoke City can confirm that Giannelli Imbula\u2019s contract with the Club has been cancelled by mutual consent, subject to regulatory approval.<\/p>\n<p>We wish Giannelli well in his future career.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Should the termination go through without a problem, Imbula would be free to change clubs pending the registration periods. Speaking to BBC 5Live in March 2019,\u00a0Glen Johnson hinted that Imbula&#8217;s behaviour turned things sour at Stoke prior to their relegation to the Championship.<\/p>\n<p>He said:\u00a0\u201cGiannelli Imbula subbed himself because someone didn\u2019t pass him the ball. I couldn\u2019t believe what I was seeing. It was in a pre-season game and in training, I swear to you. Record signing. Like \u00a320million or something?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s on the edge of the box or whatever, Charlie (Adam) has burst through and didn\u2019t cut the ball back so he\u2019s waved his arms in the air with his gloves on then he starts walking towards the bench.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen he\u2019s swearing in French on the bench, throwing things around, but still no one knows what\u2019s going on. Then obviously someone gets stripped off and comes on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut then 10 minutes later he decides he wants to play again. This is where it\u2019s a disgrace. He came back on and they took the kid off again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo rather than saying to G (Imbula), people are having a word with the manager, saying, \u2018Did you not see this?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019re not saying it as calmly as that by the way. We\u2019re saying, \u2018Is no one going to say anything?\u2019 But no one would say anything and they\u2019d roll their eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then it got even worse.
