{"id":1115365,"date":"2019-11-13T14:45:14","date_gmt":"2019-11-13T14:45:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/?p=1115365"},"modified":"2019-11-13T14:53:38","modified_gmt":"2019-11-13T14:53:38","slug":"bernardo-silva-fa-ban-man-city-v-chelsea-tweet-benjamin-mendy","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/news\/bernardo-silva-fa-ban-man-city-v-chelsea-tweet-benjamin-mendy\/","title":{"rendered":"Bernardo Silva suspended for Man City v Chelsea over racially-offensive tweet at Benjamin Mendy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Manchester City forward Bernardo Silva has been handed a one-match ban and a \u00a350,000 fine for his social media post relating to teammate Benjamin Mendy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Silva compared Mendy to a character featured on a pack of &#8220;Conguitos&#8221;, a sweet brand sold in Portugal and Spain in a post that appeared at 12:44 BST on 22 September, before being deleted less than an hour later.<\/p>\n<p>The Football Association released a statement on Wednesday outlining Silva&#8217;s punishment, which also requires him to complete face-to-face education as a result of admitting a breach of FA Rule E3.<\/p>\n<p>Manchester City posted the statement on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mancity.com\/news\/club-news\/club-news\/2019\/november\/fa-statement-bernardo-silva-manchester-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official website<\/a>: &#8220;Bernardo Silva has been suspended for one first team competitive fixture, fined \u00a350,000 and must complete face-to-face education after admitting a breach of FA Rule E3.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Breaking: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kickitout?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@kickitout<\/a> \u201cextremely disappointed\u201d &amp; Dan Roan (@danroan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/danroan\/status\/1176067622212898816?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 23, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Manchester City midfielder\u2019s social media activity on 22 September 2019 breached FA Rule E3(1), as it was insulting and\/or improper and\/or brought the game into disrepute, and constituted an \u201cAggravated Breach\u201d, which is defined in FA Rule E3(2), as it included reference, whether expressed or implied, to race and\/or colour and\/or ethnic origin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Silva will now miss City&#8217;s match against Chelsea after the international break.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Silva avoids a six-game ban<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/sport\/football\/premier-league\/bernardo-silva-ban-man-city-benjamin-mendy-a9201401.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Independent<\/a>, Silva&#8217;s punishment was &#8220;accepted by all&#8221; involved, though it actually could have been much more severe for the Portugal international.<\/p>\n<p>FA rules state that the <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2019\/11\/13\/man-city-midfielder-bernardo-silva-avoided-six-game-ban-benjamin-mendy-tweet-11090936\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">punishment<\/a> for racism during a match is a minimum six-game ban \u2013 former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was banned for eight games when found guilty of racist behaviour toward Patrice Evra back in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>But the fact that Silva&#8217;s incident was via a social media which he quickly deleted, coupled with the fact that he &#8220;did not have any knowledge of the historical connotations of the Conguitos character&#8221;
