Five things to know&#8230;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2014 Messi was charged with tax fraud by the Spanish government.<\/li>\n<li>Messi was accused of having used tax havens to hide\u00a0earnings from image rights, believed to be around \u00a32.95m.<\/li>\n<li>The timeframe in question was between 2007 and 2009, with Messi eventually being found guilty in 2014.<\/li>\n<li>He was sentenced to\u00a021 months in prison and fined \u00a31.8m, though his prison time was eventually revised to a\u00a0\u00a3223,000 fine in July 2017.<\/li>\n<li>Messi has now explained how he thought about leaving Barca at the time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"background-color: transparent; display: block; padding: 0; max-width: 700px;\" title=\"Audioboom player\" src=\"https:\/\/embeds.audioboom.com\/posts\/7383312-alisson-is-the-golden-middle-of-the-goalkeeper-venn-diagram\/embed\/v4?image_option=full\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>However, it was not a sentimental allegiance to the Catalan club that kept Messi at the Camp Nou, but rather a lack of offers from elsewhere, which Messi has now discussed in detail.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Qv7vyEbn0Nc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RAC1<\/a>, he said: &#8220;I had it in my\u00a0mind to leave at that time, not to leave Barcelona but to leave\u00a0Spain.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u00a0felt that I was being\u00a0mistreated and did not want to be here anymore.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had the door opened by\u00a0many clubs\u00a0but I never had an official offer because everyone knew of my previous desire to continue in Barcelona.
