Barcelona contacted Manchester United “on numerous occasions” about signing Victor Lindelof, according to the defender’s agent.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Blaugrana had been looking to bolster their defence over the summer, with Dutch centre-back Matthijs de Ligt their top priority.<\/p>\n

    De Ligt would ultimately join Juventus, meaning Barcelona had to look elsewhere, though Ernesto Valverde’s men ended the summer transfer window without signing a new centre-back.<\/p>\n

    According to the agent of Lindelof, Barcelona made numerous attempts to talk to Manchester United about signing the Swedish defender, but the Premier League club refused to listen to any offers.<\/p>\n

    “Lindelof was perhaps Man Utd’s best player last season, and there was a lot of interest from clubs that are even better [than United] at the moment,” he told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    “When Matthijs de Ligt chose Juventus, Victor was pronounced Barcelona’s first choice.<\/p>\n

    “His way of playing, his DNA, is very close to Barcelona’s way of playing. He is one of the world’s best centre-backs with the ball at his feet, and Barcelona wanted him. That’s how it was. I can talk about that now.<\/p>\n

    “They contacted Ed Woodward on numerous occasions with concrete offers. I had a meeting with their transfer manager, Matt Judge, to try to make a transition. But they just said: ‘There is no chance. Victor is one of our best players’.<\/p>\n

    “It ended up being a new agreement instead, even though Victor actually had three years left. Usually, they do not make extensions with players who have so long left on the contract, but when there was an interest at this level they had no other option.”<\/p>\n

    Lindelof has played in every Premier League game for Manchester United so far this season and will be expected to start in the Red Devils’ clash against Arsenal on Monday.<\/p>\n
