{"id":1103339,"date":"2019-08-26T15:17:15","date_gmt":"2019-08-26T14:17:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/?p=1103339"},"modified":"2019-08-26T15:17:15","modified_gmt":"2019-08-26T14:17:15","slug":"de-ligt-juventus-sarri-bench","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/news\/de-ligt-juventus-sarri-bench\/","title":{"rendered":"De Ligt &#8216;did not see Juventus snub coming&#8217; as Sarri benches \u00a367.5m signing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt has admitted he was surprised not to start the first game of the new Serie A season.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The teenager joined Juventus from Ajax in the summer for \u00a367.5m and is expected to be a key player for the Old Lady for years to come.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>De Ligt benched for Juventus: Five things to know&#8230;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>De Ligt signed for Juventus from Ajax for \u00a367.5m.<\/li>\n<li>The teenager is expected to play a key role in Turin this season.<\/li>\n<li>De Ligt previously named Maurizio Sarri as one of his reasons for joining Juventus.<\/li>\n<li>But the centre-back was left on the bench for Juventus&#8217; opening game of the new season.<\/li>\n<li>And De Ligt has admitted he was surprised with the snub.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"background-color: transparent; display: block; padding: 0; max-width: 700px;\" title=\"Audioboom player\" src=\"https:\/\/embeds.audioboom.com\/posts\/7349082-liverpool-s-new-signing-the-unsung-norwich-city-heroes-propping-up-the-pukki-party\/embed\/v4\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Despite vast excitement over the transfer, De Ligt had to watch on from the bench as Juventus kicked off their campaign with a slender 1-0 win over Parma.<\/p>\n<p>New Juventus boss Sarri opted to stick with the tried-and-tested centre-back partnership of Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci, with the latter scoring the only goal of the game.<\/p>\n<p>But De Ligt has admitted he did not expect to be named on the bench, claiming there were no clues in training that that would be the case.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Naturally, I would&#8217;ve preferred to play and I didn&#8217;t get any clues from training, so I didn&#8217;t expect to be on the bench,&#8221; he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/sport\/football\/news\/matthijs-de-ligts-11-word-19002586\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Obviously, I respect the decision of the coach. I must be realistic, as I am still settling in here in Italy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The defenders who played, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini, were considered for a long time to be the best centre-back partnership in the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>De Ligt, who won the 2018 Golden Boy award en route to captaining Ajax to a league and cup double, went on to speak of his early work at Juventus and vowed to meet Sarri&#8217;s defensive demands.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Aaron Wan-Bissaka Explained!
