Bayern Munich teenager Alphonso Davies is the club’s fastest player and could make an impact as a left-back this season, according to Lothar Matthaus.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Davies, 18, joined Bayern from MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps as a winger, but Matthaus thinks his speed could see him flourish at full-back.<\/p>\n

    The teenager scored his second goal for Bayern against Tottenham Hotspur\u00a0in the Audi Cup last month, getting forward from left-back to find the net.<\/p>\n

    And Matthaus, who won seven Bundesliga titles with Bayern, believes Davies’ future may be in defence.<\/p>\n

    “I think it (switching roles) is good,” Matthaus said<\/a>. “I used to do the same with players when I was a coach to teach them how to play defence. He has to learn how to play in defence, and this is good training for him.<\/p>\n

    “Sure, he makes two, three mistakes in defence, but he will learn from it and they will push him to have another option at left-back.”<\/p>\n

    He added: “Niko Kovac knows that Davies is not a left-back and that he prefers the left-wing position, like Kingsley Coman.<\/p>\n

    “When Coman has a problem, Davies plays on that position further up and he is very good. Sure, he has to improve his passing, but he is only 18 years old.<\/p>\n

    “I think he is the fastest player at Bayern at the moment.”<\/p>\n
