Uefa have announced that St\u00e9phanie Frappart will referee the European Super Cup in what is a historic appointment in football.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Frappart, from France, will become the first woman to referee a match in a major Uefa men’s tournament as she and her team of officials will take charge of Liverpool vs Chelsea on August 14.<\/p>\n

  • Frappart’s team is made up of predominantly female officials.<\/li>\n
  • Her compatriot Manuela Nicolosi and Irishwoman Michelle O’Neal will be lineswomen, with Cuneyt Cakir of Turkey as fourth official.<\/li>\n
  • She refereed the Fifa Women’s World Cup final last month, as well as England’s semi-final.<\/li>\n
  • Frappart became the first woman to referee a Ligue 1 match in April, officiating SC Amiens vs RC Strasbourg.<\/li>\n
  • Ligue 1 announced in June she would be a staple of their refereeing schedule.<\/li>\n
  • She becomes the second female referee of a Uefa match, after Nicole Petignat refereed three Uefa Cup qualifying games between 2004 and 2009.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    This summer has represented a monumental step forward for females in football, following the booming success of the World Cup in France. Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin echoed this view.<\/p>\n

    In an official statement, he said: “I have said on many occasions that the potential for women’s football has no limits and I am delighted that St\u00e9phanie Frappart has been appointed to officiate at this year’s Uefa Super Cup along with assistant referees Manuela Nicolosi and Michelle O’Neal.”<\/p>\n

    “As an organisation, we place the utmost importance on the development of women’s football in all areas. I hope the skill and devotion that St\u00e9phanie has shown throughout her career to reach this level will provide inspiration to millions of girls and women around Europe and show them there should be no barriers in order to reach one’s dream.”<\/p>\n
