{"id":1098089,"date":"2019-07-15T17:54:03","date_gmt":"2019-07-15T16:54:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/?p=1098089"},"modified":"2021-12-21T09:36:36","modified_gmt":"2021-12-21T09:36:36","slug":"premier-league-head-to-head-rule-change","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/news\/premier-league-head-to-head-rule-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Premier League confirm \u2018head-to-head\u2019 rule introduced as potential table tie-break"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Premier League have confirmed that head-to-head records will now separate teams who are level on points, goal difference and goals scored at the end of the season.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The previous rule dictated that teams who were level in these three fields when competing for the title, European qualification of relegation would be pitted against each other in a play-off game to decide a winner.<\/p>\n<h2>Major rule changes next season: 5 things to know&#8230;<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Of course, the biggest change next season is the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).<\/li>\n<li>Attacking players are no longer allowed within a yard of a three-man defensive wall from a free-kick.<\/li>\n<li>The ball is now live the moment it is kicked at a goal-kick &#8211; previously, it had to leave the 18-yard box.<\/li>\n<li>If the referee is about to book a player but the attacking team takes a quick free-kick, the referee can delay the booking until the next stoppage.<\/li>\n<li>Substituted players must now leave the pitch by the nearest point on the touchline\/goal line, rather than walking to the dugout.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"background-color: transparent; display: block; padding: 0; max-width: 700px;\" title=\"Audioboom player\" src=\"https:\/\/embeds.audioboom.com\/posts\/7311398-alexander-arnold-s-perfect-mentor-the-goat-right-back-is-available-for-free\/embed\/v4?eid=AQAAANirJF0mkG8A\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>An official statement released on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.premierleague.com\/news\/1262217\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">premierleague.com<\/a>\u00a0states that this extra game is now &#8216;less likely&#8217; with the addition of this rule.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there are still possibilities that the head-to-head will not be enough to separate two sides either.<\/p>\n<p>In this case: &#8220;If clubs still cannot be separated, the team who scored the most goals away from home in the head-to-head matches will get the highest position.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Only if the clubs remain level in the table after this will a playoff be arranged, at a neutral ground, with the format, timing and venue being determined by the Premier League Board.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What Should Arsenal Do Next?
