Manchester United will not be in contention to win next season’s Premier League title according to former club chairman, Martin Edwards.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Reds Devils have struggled this season and despite a momentary resurgence under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, they have finished the campaign in disappointing form.<\/p>\n

  1. Manchester United lost two of their opening three Premier League fixtures this season.<\/li>\n
  2. Former manager Jose Mourinho was sacked in December following a poor first half of the campaign.<\/li>\n
  3. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over and led United on a 12-game unbeaten run before losing 2-0 to Arsenal in March.<\/li>\n
  4. They have now gone two successive seasons without winning a trophy and have missed out on Champions League football next season.<\/li>\n
  5. This summer will be Solskjaer’s first opportunity to invest in the squad with big-signings expected.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    United drew 1-1 with already-relegated Huddersfield Town on Sunday to end any hopes of participating in the Champions League next season.<\/p>\n

    Following this news, former chairman Edwards discussed United’s chances of success next season, with the 73-year-old admitting he doesn’t think they can challenge for the Premier League title.<\/p>\n

    Speaking on talkSPORT<\/a>, Edwards said:\u00a0\u201cI can\u2019t see them challenging for the title next year.\u00a0I think it needs a rebuilding job, I think they need certain players. I think United supporters are going to be patient.<\/p>\n

    \u201cAnd I think with Ole they will be [more] patient than previous managers because he is one of our own.<\/p>\n

    \u201cHe\u2019s been a player, he\u2019s popular, he understands the club, he makes the right noises, he\u2019s enthusiastic.<\/p>\n

    \u201cSo I think he will get support from the supporters and I hope he gets support from the management.\u201d<\/p>\n

    “We’ve slipped backwards since Ferguson left”<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    Despite winning the Europa League, FA Cup, EFL Cup and FA Community Shield since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, United haven’t come close to claiming the Premier League title for their own.<\/p>\n

    With arch-rivals Man City and Liverpool constantly developing and dictating the pace at the top end of the table, the Red Devils haven’t been able to put together a squad of players who can replicate previous successes.<\/p>\n

    Edwards believes now is the time for the club and its supporters to believe in Solskjaer. He continued:\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s been difficult since\u00a0Alex Ferguson\u00a0left, Ole is now the fourth manager. I don\u2019t think any of them found it particularly easy, so we\u2019ve sort of slipped backwards a bit.<\/p>\n

    \u201cOle came in and did a great job earlier on in the season, I think it\u2019s been difficult since \u2013 the last few games.\u00a0We\u2019ve struggled a bit, particularly against\u00a0Barcelona\u00a0in Europe. But I think Ole now needs to be given support to start building again.<\/p>\n

    \u201cIt\u2019s not an easy job, it\u2019s not been easy following Alex Ferguson, he\u2019s started well but I think now he\u2019s finding out how hard it is.\u00a0But hopefully, with a bit of support, he gets the players he wants in and going forward he can rebuild it.\u201d<\/p>\n
