Rio Ferdinand has urged Manchester United to tie David De Gea down to a new contract “as soon as possible” so that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can build a title-challenging team.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

United are said to have triggered a one-year extension in De Gea’s current deal, meaning he will be out of contract at the end of next season unless fresh terms are agreed.<\/p>\n

  1. De Gea signed a new four-year\u00a0 contract with United in the summer of 2015.<\/li>\n
  2. The Red Devils included a one-year extension option in that deal which they are strongly believed to have triggered.<\/li>\n
  3. In the past, De Gea has been linked with Real Madrid but the La Liga giants signed Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea last summer.<\/li>\n
  4. However, Courtois has struggled at Madrid, who are reportedly still keen on De Gea.<\/li>\n
  5. United fans now face an anxious wait to see if De Gea will signed another new contract.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Appearing on BT Sport ahead of United’s Champions League quarter-final first leg against Barcelona, Ferdinand insisted his former club must prioritise renewing De Gea’s contract. <\/p>\n

    “I think they need to get that bit of business done as soon as possible,” Ferdinand said. <\/p>\n

    “The last few years he’s been the best goalkeeper on the planet. “If you’re going to try and build a title-challenging team, you get the foundations right, and he’s right in the mix of that foundation that you need to sort out.” <\/p>\n

    Hargreaves: De Gea could be performing better<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    Owen Hargreaves and Henrik Larsson \u2013 two more ex-United players \u2013 were also guests in the BT Sport studio. <\/p>\n

    Both agreed with Ferdinand, although Hargreaves suggested De Gea’s level of performance hasn’t been up to scratch of late. <\/p>\n

    “Even by his standards, he’d probably say he hasn’t [recently] been at the level that he’s reached,” Hargreaves said. <\/p>\n
