Ajax would be interested in re-signing Tottenham Hotspur defenders Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld in the future, according to the club’s director of football Marc Overmars.

The Dutch side are enjoying a successful season as they battle it out for the Eredivisie title while continuing with their Champions League adventure.

Would Spurs pair leave for Ajax? Five things you need to know…

  1. Both players started their career at Ajax before making their heading towards Tottenham.

  2. Vertonghen made 220 appearances for the Dutch side, while Alderweireld made 186.

  3. The defensive pair have helped transform Spurs into a top-four Premier League side while also competing in the Champions League.

  4. Both players have under a year and a half left on their current deals with the north London club.

  5. Director of football Overmars has acknowledged this, and the club have therefore approached the two players regarding a move back to Ajax.

Both players enjoyed a highly successful spell with Ajax, with Vertonghen helping the club win two Eredivisie titles and Alderweireld winning three.

The Belgian twosome have seemingly enjoyed playing football alongside each other, with Overmars admitting that Ajax want them to continue that on Dutch soil.

Admitting that now may not be the time to talk about the potential transfer of the two Spurs defenders, Overmars said: “We have to be patient and see what the future holds.”

They come as a defensive package

The two Belgians started their career off together at folded Belgian club Germinal Beerschot before breaking through the famous Ajax youth system to become first-team regulars.

Vertonghen left the club first, joining Tottenham Hotspur in 2012 whereas Alderweireld left Ajax a year later, joining La Liga giants Atletico Madrid.

A successful loan spell at Southampton led Alderweireld to sign permanently with Tottenham Hotspur in 2015, reuniting him with Vertonghen once more.

Since then, they have been key players at the heart of the Spurs defence. On the international stage, the two defenders have 195 caps between them, establishing themselves as a vital pairing on both the domestic and international stage.
