This was their match with the third-fewest amount of 10+ pass sequences in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/stats\/competitions\/premier-league-2026-2027\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Premier League<\/a> this season (8).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in the chaos, one specific player stood out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-yoast-seo-table-of-contents yoast-table-of-contents\"><h2>How did Everton break down Newcastle&#8217;s defence?<\/h2><ul><li><a href=\"#h-dewsbury-hall-pulling-the-strings\" data-level=\"3\">Dewsbury-Hall pulling the strings<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-george-wreaking-havoc\" data-level=\"3\">George wreaking havoc<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-dewsbury-hall-pulling-the-strings\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dewsbury-Hall pulling the strings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/stats\/players\/kiernan-dewsbury-hall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall<\/a> is more of a number 8 rather than a 10. Even playing as Everton&#8217;s centre-attacking midfielder, he still has tendencies to drift wide and operate in the half-space instead of central areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tonight however, he played like a true, classic and old-school Number 10. And Newcastle&#8217;s defensive scheme actually fuelled that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matthias Jaissle, as usual, had them defending man-to-man at basically all times. But they left one of the centre-backs as spare man for extra coverage. He obviously didn&#8217;t want <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/stats\/players\/dan-burn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dan Burn<\/a> or Fabian Schar covering long distances and being dragged out of position with no chance of recovering in space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This meant that they both stood back with one of them busy against Barry. Meanwhile, central midfielders Joelinton and Nico Gonzalez were matched up against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/stats\/players\/james-garner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">James Garner<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/stats\/players\/harrison-armstrong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harrison Armstrong<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, Dewsbury-Hall then had all the time, space and freedom in the world to drop deep unmarked. They lack midfielders &#8211; players in general, actually &#8211; with great technique, which leads to turnovers. And the Toffees made sure to turn those errors into fast breaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Dewsbury-Hall was key to that. He was always the one getting the ball forward and finding teammates in good positions. This happened in back-to-back sequences to end the first half, but both Jake O&#8217;Brien and Armstrong failed to put their chances away. Could have been two assists then and there for KDH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unsurprisingly, however, his most magical pass was still yet to come. In a free-kick, he received it short and played a beautiful through ball to Everton&#8217;s second-most important player of the game: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/stats\/players\/tyrique-george\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tyrique George<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lukas Hornicek&#8217;s saved his initial attempt, but allowed the ball to go under him, leaving Barry with an open net to score the first and only goal of the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-george-wreaking-havoc\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">George wreaking havoc<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everton actually started the match looking to attack down the right more often. They were constantly trying to get Merlin Rohl down the line against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/stats\/players\/lewis-hall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lewis Hall<\/a> &#8211; and did find some success there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But once George got more involved, he quickly became their main source of creating dangerous situations and generating advantages. With Dewsbury-Hall constantly picking them apart in central areas, right-winger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/stats\/players\/anthony-elanga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anthony Elanga<\/a> tried tracking him more closely and ignoring his main assignment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/stats\/players\/vitalii-mykolenko\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vitalii Mykolenko<\/a>. This left the Ukrainian free to receive and connect George down the wing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unsurprisingly the Dewsbury-Hall-George connection is basically what won them the game. Which goes to show just how much they relied on him going forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good performances out of George are even more important now that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/stats\/players\/jack-grealish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jack Grealish<\/a> has been unavailable for breaching club discipline.
