Man United could change managers once again in the near future.

For now, Michael Carrick still has his job and will take charge of the Red Devils when they face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this Saturday.

But he has been facing increasing pressure at the helm. It’s now eight games without a win across all competitions, and just one in the last 10.

With that in mind, we decided to take a look at every single Man United permanent manager’s final 10 matches for the club since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 and compare it to Carrick’s current form.

It’s easy to notice that the number of wins linearly has been linearly dropping since Van Gaal. And the same has happened to the Red Devils’ reputation over this period. Comparing 2026 to 2014 wouldn’t be fair because the bar is much lower now than it was then.

David Moyes (W5 D1 L4)

Ferguson recommended David Moyes as his successor, picking up from a title-winning season and high expectations.

Looking back now, Moyes probably received unfair treatment because most people did not know exactly how big of a task it was. And the squad itself didn’t look too strong without Sir Alex at the helm keeping things together.

Though most people were correct to look at the appointment with uncertainty. Moyes’ first stint at Everton, as great as it was given expectations, probably didn’t qualify him for the United job at the time.

Louis van Gaal (W7 D1 L2)

Louis van Gaal being the highest ranked manager in terms of record in the final 10 games is hardly a surprise. After all, he is the only head coach that left after the season. It usually takes more negativity and poor form for mid-season sackings.

The Dutchman left Old Trafford winning seven of his final 10 matches in charge and with the FA Cup trophy.

Jose Mourinho (W4 D3 L3)

The Special One still ranks as the most successful Man United manager post-Sir Alex Ferguson in terms of points per game (1.97), among permanent ones at least.

However, towards the final stretch of his tenure, performances rarely matched the results and he got the sack in December – the same as his second spell at Chelsea, which ended in 2015.

Considering how famous the ‘memes’ have gotten, it’s easy to forget that the Red Devils’ famous 2-1 away win at Juventus is part of Mourinho’s final 10 games in charge of United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (W3 D2 L5)

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure at Manchester United is an awful lot similar to Michael Carrick’s current trajectory.

A beloved and legendary former player that takes over as interim manager, finds success playing a similar brand of football to United’s golden era and gets the permanent job before everything falls to ruins.

Carrick still has time to turn things around, no matter how unlikely that may look now. Solskjaer, on the other hand, couldn’t.

Erik ten Hag (W3 D5 L2)

Opposite to Louis van Gaal, Erik ten Hag leading Manchester United to the FA Cup title didn’t end his tenure as manager. In fact, it bought him more time.

It wasn’t meant to be, however, as he left two years ago – almost to the day.

Ruben Amorim (W3 D5 L2)

Ruben Amorim‘s sacking came at a strange time, when he had lost just one of his previous eight matches. That’s not to say it wasn’t the right decision, with his tactical inflexibility leaving little room for hopes of improvement.

Not to mention the record can be misleading. Having only the Premier League to play helped a lot. And he played a part in that by losing to Grimsby Town on penalties in the Carabao Cup early on in the season.

Michael Carrick (W1 D4 L5)

The previous managers were sacked either by negative results, poor performances or ‘losing the dressing room’, in a way. Michael Carrick’s current run features a bit of all those factors.

The Red Devils have yet to put together a strong full 90 minutes of football this season. Even their 4-0 win against Sabah saw them on the wrong end of a few dangerous fast breaks that could have led to goals.

Their only other win, at home to Ipswich Town, featured a ton of individual mistakes from the visitors: errors leading to goals, own goals, penalties, you name it.

Despite all that, Man United fans seem to know the most needed change is not in the manager role. The video of them singing and celebrating Carrick as he walked around Old Trafford and immediately switching to booing the rest of the team as he went down the tunnel tells everything.

The board are giving him a far longer leash than any other manager since Ferguson. It may be because there are still things to work out with the next manager and they are preparing the contract, or just deciding who it will be.

But it could also be a warning to the players that it’s up to them to lock in and try harder because the current head coach isn’t going anywhere.

United may be in a tough run of matches, having lost recently to high-flying Bournemouth and Como sides. But it will only get tougher over the next few weeks, with the likes of Chelsea, Roma, Aston Villa and Liverpool up next.
