After winning their first game, the Gunners are now five without victory, their longest such run in WSL history. It leaves the Gunners eighth in the table, with Renee Slegers under pressure.

So all eyes turn to the north London derby this weekend. Can Arsenal stop the rot and climb the table? Or will Tottenham get just a second-ever WSL win over their north London rivals?

In this article, we’ll cover:

Arsenal’s attacking woes

Tottenham’s unwanted defensive switch-up

Arsenal’s attacking woes

All of the focus surrounding Arsenal’s poor start this season has been on their attack. The Gunners are the joint second-lowest goalscorers in the WSL with just five goals from their opening six games. Only bottom-of-the-league Charlton Athletic (three) have scored fewer goals than Slegers’ side. They’ve blanked in two of their six matches and only scored more than once in one — a 4-2 defeat to Manchester City.

Arsenal’s biggest problem here isn’t that they aren’t creating chances. In fact, they’re getting into more shooting positions than most. Only Tottenham (107) and Chelsea (101) have created more chances as a unit than Arsenal’s 93 in the WSL this season. The Gunners also rank third for their 121 shots, but drop down to sixth for their 37 efforts on target. Only two teams have a lower shot accuracy than Arsenal (30.58%).

It only gets worse when you look deeper into the numbers. Arsenal have averaged a goal every 24.2 shots in the WSL this season, the worst of any side by some distance. Everton (14.4 shots per goal) are their closest rivals, but it’s a big gap. The Gunners’ conversion rate of 4.13% is also the worst in the league. Only Charlton (one) and Everton (none) have scored fewer big chances than Arsenal’s two.

Unsurprisingly, Arsenal are the worst underperformers against Expected Goals in the WSL this season. Their five goals have come from 11.0 xG, with a -6.0 underperformance almost 3.0 worse than any other side. Arsenal also have some of the worst shots too, averaging just 0.09 xG per shot — only Everton (0.07 xG per shot) and Aston Villa (0.08 xG per shot) have been worse.

Arsenal’s key underperformer

Slegers has been able to rely on Alessia Russo for goals in the past. But the striker just hasn’t clicked in the WSL this season. She hasn’t been helped by being pushed into a deeper role, operating more as a No.10 when in possession.

Russo has taken 20 shots in the WSL this season, more than any other Arsenal player. But only five of those have been on target, with Russo scoring once. In the recent international break, Russo scored three goals in two games against Greece, showing that this isn’t a downturn in form. But it is worrying for Arsenal. Of the 15 players to have taken at least 15 shots in the WSL this season, only Julie Blakstad (no goals from 15 shots) has a worse conversion rate than Russo’s 5%. The Englishwoman is also averaging 0.02 xG per shot, not really getting into key goalscoring positions.

Thankfully for Slegers, the Gunners have been able to rely on Lisa Baum. The German teenager is the only Arsenal player with more than one goal in the WSL this season. She’s been a test for opposition goalkeepers too, hitting the target with nine of her 15 shots in the league.

Tottenham’s unwanted defensive switch-up

No one could have predicted Tottenham’s recent struggles. While the level of opponent was increasing, Tottenham looked good in their first four games. They had conceded just two goals and kept two clean sheets. But across their past two games, Tottenham have conceded 12 goals, with both London City Lionesses and Chelsea putting six past the Spurs backline.

There are a few reasons why. The first is the level of opposition. Tottenham have had more possession than their opponents in four of their six games. They boasted 58.6% against West Ham United, 71.5% vs Crystal Palace — who did have Fuka Tsunoda sent off after just seven minutes –, 70.5% against Aston Villa, and 59.4% against London City Lionesses. Tottenham won the first three, but that’s where the level of opposition comes into play. Despite only holding 40.6% possession, LCL made their time count. They outshot Tottenham 21-18 and hit the target 10 times. Two-time Ballon d’Or Feminin winner Alexia Putellas scored twice, as did Kadidiatou Diani. There were also goals for Danielle van de Donk and Delphine Cascarino, the latter having won the Women’s Champions League six times.

In Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool, Martin Ho’s side had to battle hard for their result. They had 41.2% possession and faced 18 shots, with six hitting the target. And Spurs benefitted from a Samantha Kerr own goal at the other end of the pitch. Last weekend, Chelsea were clinical in their finishing. The Blues did have 54.9% possession but Tottenham managed 13 shots and seven on target. The problem was, that Chelsea hit the target with eight of their 17 efforts, scoring six.

Errors creeping in

With less of the ball as an average, Tottenham have been pushed to defend deeper. Spurs have averaged 4.5 possessions won in the attacking third per game across the past two matches — compared to 6.0 in their first four. Tottenham are also averaging 21 possessions won in the middle third, down from 23.25 in their opening four games. While Tottenham’s possessions won in the defensive third have increased (21 per game from 19.25) it doesn’t really make up for the lack of action further up the pitch.

And that’s where the main issues lie. Despite having less of the ball, Tottenham are still averaging fewer tackles. Across their first four games, Tottenham averaged 14.5 tackles per match. That dropped slightly to 14.0 tackles per game across their past two matches.

Part of that ties in with the individual issues Tottenham are having. They are making more errors leading to shots or goals than they were in their unbeaten start. There were three errors leading to shots against London City Lionesses. Amanda Nilden made two while Victoria Pelova also put her teammates at risk. And then goalkeeper Lize Kop made an error leading to a goal. It was a similar story against Chelsea. Pelova made another error leading to a shot, while Toko Koga made an error leading to a goal. Across their first four games combined, Tottenham had only made one error leading to a shot and another leading to a goal.

Unlike Arsenal’s attacking problems, which feel more system-related, Spurs’ defensive woes can be fixed pretty easily. Which will boost their hopes of getting a monumental win this weekend.

Read more:

Latest football news

Football betting tips

Best betting sites

Best free bet offers

Football accumulator tips

This weekend, Tottenham Hotspur Women host Arsenal Women in what might be the most important north London derby in the Women’s Super League to date.
