But Newcastle remained firm in keeping the left-back, and chances of his departure have dropped following the new deal. He stated his family links to the club, with his dad and uncle boyhood Newcastle supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a big boost for Newcastle and manager Matthias Jaissle, with Hall now able to focus on growing even more as a left-back this season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-yoast-seo-table-of-contents yoast-table-of-contents\"><h2>Why Lewis Hall is already among the best<\/h2><ul><li><a href=\"#h-defensive-strength\" data-level=\"2\">Defensive strength<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-in-possession-role\" data-level=\"2\">In-possession role<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-how-hall-matches-up\" data-level=\"2\">How Hall matches up<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-defensive-strength\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Defensive strength<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s easy to forget that Hall has only just turned 22, given the high level of his performances to date. Fans were frustrated to see him not included in Thomas Tuchel&#8217;s England squad for the World Cup, and he&#8217;s already showing them what they missed out on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 22-year-old leads Premier League left-backs for tackles this season, making eight so far. He has been a key ball-winner for Newcastle and a busy one too. Jaissle has his side defending deeper than they were under Eddie Howe last season, with a league-low three possessions won in the attacking third. And that&#8217;s where Hall comes in. He has won possession eight times in the middle third and 19 times in the defensive third &#8212; both league highs among left-backs. His 12 clearances is the most among left-backs in the Premier League this season and he ranks second for seven headed clearances. Hall has also made three effective cross blocks and five blocked shots, both highs among his positional peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although there is a much smaller sample size for now, Hall is generally performing better than he was last season on per 90 minutes metrics. The biggest difference so far is the increase to 6.36 possessions won in the defensive third per 90, from 2.44 last season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-in-possession-role\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-possession role<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hall isn&#8217;t on the ball as much as he was last season. He averaged 83.47 touches per 90 minutes in the league under Howe, with that number dropping down to 67.58 per 90 under Jaissle. Similarly, his passing numbers have dropped too. But the Englishman is still doing a job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across his three matches so far, Hall has attempted 108 passes in total, completing 88. His passing accuracy of 81.48% is respectable, even if it has dropped slightly from 85.25% last season. And he still ranks well against fellow left-backs for his in-possession stats. That&#8217;s down from 16.98 attempted and 13.38 completed last season. In terms of total, Hall&#8217;s 35 final third passes attempted sees him seventh among left-backs this season, but five of the six ahead of him play for teams who dominate possession. Only Jay Dasilva (41) has attempted more final third passes among left-backs for teams averaging less than 50% possession. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deeper average position has enabled Hall to attempt more long passes, though. He averages 8.03 attempted long passes per 90 this season, up from 4.63 in 2025\/26. His completion numbers have seen an increase too, from 1.94 last season to 3.35. He ranks top among left-backs for both long passes attempted and completed in total. And he also ranks in the top five for crosses attempted and completed, so he&#8217;s still getting involved in the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-how-hall-matches-up\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Hall matches up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We&#8217;ve spent a lot of time talking about Hall&#8217;s positional peers so far. So it makes sense to see how Hall matches up across the board against the best left-backs in the league right now. Those include Riccardo Calafiori, Josko Gvardiol, Luke Shaw and Andy Robertson. And Hall comes out looking very good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 22-year-old has the best tackles per 90 average of the aforementioned quintet, coming in with 2.7. That places him just ahead of Gvardiol (2.5) and Shaw (2.2). Hall has also won the best ground duels with 4.7 per 90, though he ranks third for his 58.33% success rate. That does include Robertson, who has won all five of his contested ground duels. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class='vccm vccm-compare'data-compare=\"av5cfep5hvMXd2CvrMyPb\" data-show-sponsor=\"false\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hall leads for his 4.1 clearances per 90, again higher than Robertson (3.4) and Shaw (2.5). Gvardiol and Calafiori don&#8217;t have as high numbers due to the strength of their teams. It&#8217;s a similar case for Hall&#8217;s 9.1 ball recoveries. He blows the rest of the water, but that&#8217;s because he has had to do a lot more defending than anyone else. Still, it&#8217;s a good sign that he is very capable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And even on the metrics he doesn&#8217;t lead, Hall holds his own. His 1.7 interceptions per 90 ranks Hall second among the quintet, only just behind Gvardiol&#8217;s 1.8. Despite only creating 1.1 chances per 90, he&#8217;s only bettered by Luke Shaw&#8217;s 1.8. And he&#8217;s in the mix for his 3.4 crosses attempted per 90.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hall isn&#8217;t the finished product, not by a long shot. But the early signs show a player set to become one of the best.
