It was a heroic feat to even win promotion, let alone by winning the Championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sky Blues didn&#8217;t exactly have a stacked squad that people looked at and thought it was an obligation to go up. It&#8217;s important to keep in mind how good of a job Frank Lampard has done since taking charge in November 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then there&#8217;s the fact that Coventry have already had to face defending champions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/stats\/clubs\/arsenal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arsenal<\/a> at the Emirates, and runners-up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/stats\/clubs\/manchester-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Manchester City<\/a> at the Etihad in their first three games. It makes sense that they are still looking for their first points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The home loss to fellow promoted side Hull City is one we can hold against them. But they did bounce back and looked better the following week, so maybe there are signs of things possibly turning around already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-yoast-seo-table-of-contents yoast-table-of-contents\"><h2>Why are Coventry City having a hard time in the Premier League?<\/h2><ul><li><a href=\"#h-rest-defence\" data-level=\"3\">Rest defence<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-going-away-from-their-attacking-identity\" data-level=\"3\">Going away from their attacking identity<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-individual-errors-up-at-bothe-ends\" data-level=\"3\">Individual errors up at bothe ends<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-rest-defence\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rest defence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s start with the most urgent and glaring issue. At the same time, no side has conceded more fast-break goals than their two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The game against Hull was a perfect encapsulation of these problems. Liam Millar had no right to have even one of the chances he had to score &#8212; let alone both. Coventry had three defenders back and they were all in one-on-one situations with the Tigers&#8217; forwards, but not marking them tightly enough and leaving enough space for them to receive and perform any action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oli McBurnie played the through-ball, Millar ran in behind and Mohamed Belloumi was free to receive the pass. Luckily for the Sky Blues, the Canadian decided to go on his own and placed his shot wide. Unluckily for them, however, Millar had a similar opportunity less than 10 minutes later. This time he made it count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is still somewhat Lampard can control, though. There is a way to attack and commit fewer bodies forward, not exposing the backline in potential one-on-one situations. Of course, it could take a toll on their attacking combinations, with football being nothing but a short blanket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-going-away-from-their-attacking-identity\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Going away from their attacking identity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coventry didn&#8217;t have the best of transfer windows. They ended up with 10 new faces &#8212; not considering Frank Onyeka and Carl Rushworth, whose loan deals became permanent. Whether they originated from wide combinations looking to get runners down the byline or in set pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the opener against Arsenal, it took them around 30 minutes to finally try and settle in possession, bringing bodies out wide. But it ended up with a miscommunication and a counter-attack for the Gunners, due to the lack of chemistry. Loum Tchaouna and Caleb Yirenkyi are still struggling in that department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not having either one of Jack Rudoni, Ephron Mason-Clark or Tatsuhiro Sakamoto in the starting lineup definitely hurts them. The Japanese was the only one fit from the start of the season, though, which is unfortunate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But things did start to look better when those players were more involved. The Sky Blues had their best performance of the season away at the Etihad, and both Rudoni and Mason-Clark started the game. And it was also the one in which they showed more emphasis on set pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a tough dilemma, though. They need to maintain the backbone of the squad that went up &#8211; or at least the footballing principles that led to the promotion. But at the same time, they need to improve in terms of player quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tchaouna already looks miles ahead of Sakamoto in the pecking order. Gustavo Hamer and Yann Gboho are likely going to play more going forward, which could mean fewer minutes for the likes of Rudoni and Mason-Clark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But then again, it&#8217;s also hard to try and get your game going with the likes of Arsenal and Man City welcoming you back into the Premier League after 25 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-individual-errors-up-at-bothe-ends\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Individual errors up at bothe ends<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is actually plenty of good news for Coventry if you think about it. Making a few tweaks to how the team is set up in-possession to be in better positions to defend as soon as losing the ball, knowing they won&#8217;t face Arsenal and Man City all the time. And there is one more to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few of the goals they have conceded so far are relatively easy to clean up. Erling Haaland would never had scored if Rushworth hadn&#8217;t got his hands away from the ball at the last second for whatever reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/stats\/clubs\/brighton-hove-albion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brighton and Hove Albion<\/a> goalkeeper was also undecisive when leaving his line and parrying a cross straight at Bukayo Saka&#8217;s feet. And he should have stopped Martin Odegaard&#8217;s awkward attempt as well. Coventry have had five big chances and 2.86 Expected Goals, both of which rank near the bottom of the league. However, their average of 0.11 xG per shot attempt ranks joint-ninth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taiwo Awoniyi missed a chance worth 0.70 xG against Hull &#8211; though it wasn&#8217;t as easy as it might sound based on the number. The Nigerian striker also had a clear-cut opportunity at the Etihad (0.31 xG), but placed his shot just wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was also the case for Rudoni (a header worth 0.29 xG inside the six-yard box) and Ellis Simms (a right-footed attempt worth 0.30 xG).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, Coventry might have faced the two best individual performances of any goalkeeper in the Premier League so far. At least that&#8217;s what advanced metrics suggest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goalkeepers with the most goals prevented in a single game so far this season have both done it against the Sky Blues. But they need to do a better job in front of goal to give themselves a chance of surviving.
