But, to make matters worse, Eddie Howe is reportedly set to step down as Newcastle manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Howe took charge of Newcastle in November 2021 as the start of a new era under their owners. He had a rough start to life at St James&#8217; Park but eventually lifted Newcastle to where they thought they should be. During his time at the club, Newcastle have qualified for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/bet\/football-tips\/champions-league-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Champions League<\/a> twice and won the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/bet\/football-tips\/efl-cup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carabao Cup<\/a> &#8212; their first major trophy in 70 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So why is it all change this summer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-yoast-seo-table-of-contents yoast-table-of-contents\"><h2>In this article, we&#8217;ll cover<\/h2><ul><li><a href=\"#h-why-is-eddie-howe-leaving-newcastle\" data-level=\"2\">Why is Eddie Howe leaving Newcastle?<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-what-does-the-future-hold-for-newcastle\" data-level=\"2\">What does the future hold for Newcastle?<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-what-next-for-eddie-howe\" data-level=\"2\">What next for Eddie Howe?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-is-eddie-howe-leaving-newcastle\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is Eddie Howe leaving Newcastle?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Howe has been at Newcastle for four-and-a-half-years now and was one of the longest-serving managers in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/bet\/football-tips\/premier-league\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Premier League<\/a>. Only Mikel Arteta (six years at Arsenal) had been at their current club for longer. He is regarded as one of the best English managers right now and continues to be tipped to one day manage the Three Lions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Howe first took charge at Newcastle, he was backed by his board to build a European-chasing squad. But with PSR rules, Newcastle have had to become a selling club. Across the past two years alone, Newcastle have sold Elliot Anderson, Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali. While Newcastle have spent over \u00a3100million on players, they haven&#8217;t really replaced the quality of Tonali and Gordon. Bazoumana Toure, Aladji Bamba, Ewen Jaouen and Sean Steur are all under the age of 21 and combine for 84 top-flight appearances. Gordon has 176 on his own, while Tonali has racked up 209. Guimaraes has played 270 top-flight games during his career. The four new arrivals aren&#8217;t adequate replacements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there is also talk that it was time for Howe and Newcastle to part ways. Newcastle haven&#8217;t had the best pre-season so far, losing 4-1 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/stats\/clubs\/bristol-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bristol City<\/a> in what proved to be Howe&#8217;s last unofficial game in charge. While he has brought them success, Newcastle haven&#8217;t reached the board&#8217;s expectations at a consistent rate. In Howe&#8217;s 231 games in charge, Newcastle have won 112, losing 71 alongside 48 draws. That&#8217;s a 48.48% win rate. Not to mention the football Newcastle have been playing, which hasn&#8217;t been as free-flowing or attacking as fans would have liked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-does-the-future-hold-for-newcastle\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does the future hold for Newcastle?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-who-is-matthias-jaissle\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who is Matthias Jaissle?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to reports, Matthias Jaissle has been lined up to replace Howe in the St James&#8217; Park dugout. The 38-year-old is currently managing Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, leading them to back-to-back AFC Champions League victories. But he also has European managerial experience under his belt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jaissle cut his teeth in his native Austria, starting out as manager of Salzburg-based club FC Liefering. He then made the move to Red Bull Salzburg, where he made his name. Jaissle was in charge of Red Bull Salzburg for two seasons, winning the Austrian Bundesliga in both of his campaigns. Die Roten Bullen won 63 of Jaissle&#8217;s 92 games in charge, losing just nine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While winning the league was no real change for Red Bull Salzburg, they haven&#8217;t lifted the title since Jaissle left. He also led the to the knockout stages of the Champions League for the first (and only) time in their history. That came in his Jaissle&#8217;s first season in charge, with Red Bull Salzburg second in their group behind Lille and ahead of Sevilla. Unfortunately the journey did end in the last-16 with an 8- 2aggregate thrashing by Bayern Munich. But even that included a draw with the German giants in the first leg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He left Red Bull Salzburg in the summer of 2023, just two days before the Austrian Bundesliga started. And it wasn&#8217;t a happy ending. Jaissle&#8217;s departure came because he had asked for permission to talk to Al-Ahli ahead of a move. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We believe that a coach who is so intensely preoccupied with a potential club change just two days before the start of an important season shouldn&#8217;t be present at the opening match,&#8221; Red Bull Salzburg&#8217;s managing director Stephan Reiter said upon Jaissle&#8217;s departure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-what-is-matthias-jaissle-s-style-of-play\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Matthias Jaissle&#8217;s style of play?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his time at Red Bull Salzburg often utilised a two-man strike partnership, often partnering Karim Adeyemi and Benjamin Sesko. But he has stuck with a more recognised 4-2-3-1 at Al-Ahli, allowing more defensive structure. Which might not be what Newcastle fans want to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Al-Ahli ranked 15th out of 18 teams in the Saudi Pro League last season for attempted passes per game, with 345.85. It was a similar case for their 515.29 touches per game. They were also on the ball slightly more than Al-Ahli, with an average of 52.56% possession. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lot of Al-Ahli&#8217;s defending was done higher up the pitch. They ranked fourth for possessions won in the attacking third (4.59 per game) and possessions won in the middle third (18.68). All while ranking 18th for their 16.44 possessions won in the defensive third per game. That would be a change for Newcastle, who ranked around the middle of the table for possessions won in all three thirds of the pitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-next-for-eddie-howe\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What next for Eddie Howe?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to reports, Howe is set to take a break from football. But when he comes back, he&#8217;ll likely have a host of options from which to choose. The early favourites are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/stats\/clubs\/england\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">England<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/stats\/clubs\/manchester-united\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Manchester United<\/a>, with the former a more likely role. Thomas Tuchel&#8217;s future came into doubt after England&#8217;s World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina. While he looks set to continue, Howe is always among the names ready to replace him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Man Utd being high up the list is interesting, with Michael Carrick only recently getting the job on a permanent basis. Again, Howe has been linked to the Man Utd post in the past, and will always be mentioned when the opportunity arises. But there are also early odds for Howe to move to the Saudi Pro League, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/stats\/clubs\/manchester-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Manchester City<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/stats\/clubs\/tottenham-hotspur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tottenham Hotspur<\/a> are other possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the way things appear to have ended at Newcastle, Howe is still regarded as a top manager.
