In fact, if Raya repeats the feat this time around, he&#8217;ll draw level with Petr Cech and Joe Hart as the joint-record holders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raya was, of course, protected by an elite defence including the centre-back pairing of William Saliba and Gabriel. Indeed, the Spaniard was called upon to make just 1.62 saves per 90 minutes, ranking him 25th among Premier League goalkeepers with at least 25% of minutes played. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the big thing that set Raya apart &#8212; when focusing purely on shot-stopping and not his elite distribution &#8212; was his habit of coming up with huge saves in critical moments, right when Arsenal looked at their most vulnerable. Think his magnificent leap to deny a goalbound Yankuba Minteh effort as the Gunners beat Brighton 2-1 in December, or his Save of the Month contender against Chelsea in March as Mikel Arteta&#8217;s men won by the same scoreline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raya is sure to face very stiff competition from Manchester City&#8217;s Gianluigi Donnarumma. That puts him among an elite group of goalkeepers from each of the three clubs that have won the title during that period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What&#8217;s more, Raya is Pickford&#8217;s nearest rival when it comes to saves in that period, but the Everton man is 160 clear on 584. That total leaves him 85 clear of any other Premier League goalkeeper across the last five years, and you only have to take a look at his highlights reel to see how mind-boggling some of those saves have been. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pickford has been a one-man buffer between Everton and oblivion at times, but under David Moyes, they&#8217;re starting to climb the ladder again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Toffees very much get by on defensive resilience, with only five sides conceding fewer goals than them last season despite finishing 13th in the table. That&#8217;s unlikely to change under Moyes, so Pickford &#8212; who came third in last season&#8217;s Golden Glove race &#8212; will surely be in the mix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-outsider-robin-roefs\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The outsider: Robin Roefs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/2026\/07\/27150618\/player_-smart-radar-5-1-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1476024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/2026\/07\/27150618\/player_-smart-radar-5-1-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/2026\/07\/27150618\/player_-smart-radar-5-1-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/2026\/07\/27150618\/player_-smart-radar-5-1-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/2026\/07\/27150618\/player_-smart-radar-5-1-1229x1536.jpg 1229w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/2026\/07\/27150618\/player_-smart-radar-5-1-214x267.jpg 214w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/2026\/07\/27150618\/player_-smart-radar-5-1-160x200.jpg 160w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/2026\/07\/27150618\/player_-smart-radar-5-1-48x60.jpg 48w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/2026\/07\/27150618\/player_-smart-radar-5-1-120x150.jpg 120w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/2026\/07\/27150618\/player_-smart-radar-5-1-59x74.jpg 59w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/2026\/07\/27150618\/player_-smart-radar-5-1.jpg 1620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sunderland were one of those sides to concede fewer goals than Everton, allowing just 48 in 38 matches as they made a stunning return to the Premier League &#8212; qualifying for Europe, no less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robin Roefs was a key driver behind their continental qualification, keeping 10 clean sheets and making the third-most saves (109) in the division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s incredible when you consider the Dutchman was quite a controversial signing, given how important Anthony Patterson was to the Black Cats earning promotion in the first place. But Roefs has taken to his duties at the Stadium of Light brilliantly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is the worry that Sunderland&#8217;s relative second-half-of-the-season drop-off could be a sign of things to come.
