However, they did beat the latter from the spot on home soil in the 1998 quarter-finals in a rare World Cup shootout success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/stats\/clubs\/spain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spain<\/a>, they&#8217;ve exited the last two World Cups on penalties, both in the round of 16 stage, against Morocco in 2022 and hosts Russia in 2018. That barely scratches the surface in a story of almost universal pain for La Roja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the increased number of teams, there have only been four shootouts at this summer&#8217;s tournament so far, and none involving any of the four semi-finalists. So, what do we know about France and Spain&#8217;s overall World Cup penalty shootout records to help us judge their chances should they go all the way on Tuesday?<\/p>\n\n\n    <div In fact, they were involved in the first-ever World Cup penalty shootout at the 1982 tournament. Of course, they were beaten by West Germany, although France did take the lead in the shootout. But France did win their next shootout, at the very next World Cup. Brazil were the opponents this time, in the second-ever World Cup penalty shootout, and Luis Fernandez scored the winner with the last of their five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t until 1998 that France faced their next penalty shootout, facing Italy in the quarter-finals. Fabien Barthez was the hero, saving Luigi Di Biagio&#8217;s final penalty to send France through en route to lifting the trophy. Unfortunately, France have lost their last two penalty shootouts. Italy got their own back (and then some) in 2006, beating France on penalties to lift the trophy. David Trezeguet missed the only spot-kick in the shootout. They&#8217;ve lost four of their five World Cup penalty shootouts, with only the Netherlands matching their failures. Spain&#8217;s first taste of a World Cup penalty shootout came in 1986 when they faced, interestingly, Belgium in the quarter-finals. Eloy  Olaya missed the only spot-kick of the shootout as Spain lost 5-4. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>La Roja<\/em>&#8216;s next World Cup penalty shootout didn&#8217;t come until 2002, but it did bring them their first win. The Republic of Ireland were the opponents in an uninspiring shootout, in which five penalties were missed. But Spain scored three of their five, with Gaizka Mendieta netting the winner. That wasn&#8217;t Spain&#8217;s only penalty shootout of the 2002 World Cup, as they were knocked out by that method by South Korea in the quarter-finals. Spain have also been knocked out of the past two World Cups on penalties. In 2018, Russia sent them packing in the last-16, before a defeat to Morocco at the same stage in 2022. He has already scored one penalty at the World Cup, in normal time to secure a 1-0 win over Paraguay in the last-16. Mbappe also scored in the penalty shootout defeat to Argentina in 2022, one of just two Frenchmen to convert. The other, Randal Kolo Muani, isn&#8217;t in the squad this summer. Mbappe has an excellent record from the spot in normal time, netting 65 of his 79 penalties. In shootouts, Mbappe has scored four from five for club and country, with his only miss being the decider against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/stats\/clubs\/switzerland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Switzerland<\/a> at Euro 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of the current France squad do have experience in penalty shootouts. And they have kept a similar order. Aurelien Tchouameni is never shy to step up, even having missed a penalty in the 2022 World Cup final. He did score in the Uefa Nations League quarter-final win over Croatia in 2025. It&#8217;s a similar story for Jules Kounde. The defender missed in the win over Croatia but had scored against Portugal at Euro 2024. They&#8217;ll both no doubt take penalties should it come to that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ousmane Dembele is another strong penalty taker. The 29-year-old has often had to play second fiddle across his career, meaning he&#8217;s only taken 11 penalties. But Dembele has scored eight of them. He has also scored nine of 10 in shootouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-predicted-france-penalty-order\">Predicted France penalty order<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Kylian Mbappe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aurelien Tchouameni<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jules Kounde<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Desire Doue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ousmane Dembele<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-will-take-spain-s-penalties\">Who will take Spain&#8217;s penalties?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mikel Oyarzabal looks likely to be Spain&#8217;s first-choice penalty taker, having scored all three of his spot-kicks for <em>La Roja<\/em> last year. Overall in his senior career, Oyarzabal has only missed one of his 11 penalties excluding shootouts &#8212; and that was just his third attempt overall. Since the start of 2025, Oyarzabal has scored all eight penalties he has taken for club and country. The striker has a mixed record in shootouts, though. He has taken four penalties in shootouts overall, scoring two and missing two. He did score for Spain when they beat Switzerland on penalties at Euro 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lamine Yamal is also likely to step up, having scored his one penalty for Spain in the Uefa Nations League last summer. The Barcelona winger netted six times from the spot for his club side in 2025-26, while missing one. But he did miss in the Uefa Nations League semi-final against the Netherlands last summer, and then didn&#8217;t take one in the final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mikel Merino could start the proceedings for Spain, having done so in both Uefa Nations League shootouts last summer.
