Australia<\/a> caused a major upset as they beat Turkey<\/a> 2-0 in Vancouver on Sunday morning (UK time) in their 2026 World Cup<\/a> Group D opener.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watford forward Nestory Irankunda put the Socceroos ahead in the 27th minute, slotting into the bottom corner after racing behind the Turkish backline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turkey pushed hard for an equaliser from there, but were utterly thwarted by an inspired goalkeeping performance from Patrick Beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That allowed Connor Metcalfe to deliver a long-range effort in the 75th minute, sealing a result that blows Group D<\/a> wide open after the first round of matches. <\/p>\n\n\n

    This will go down as one of the most memorable results in Australian national team history. But while Irankunda and Metcalfe are the men to take the goalscoring glory, many down under will be singing the praises of Patrick Beach in the days to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Only 22 years old, this was just the goalkeeper’s third senior international cap and his very first competitive outing for his country. His selection ahead of Levante veteran Mathew Ryan and Randers FC’s Paul Izzo certainly raised eyebrows prior to kick-off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    However, jumping from third-choice to starter, Beach showed all the qualities that guided him to nine A-League clean sheets for Melbourne City last season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Beach was, at times, a one-man wall between Turkey and the back of the Australian net, making eight saves to the tune of 1.54 goals prevented, alongside one punch and 12 possession recoveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The standout moment was the flying fingertip save to divert Abdulkerim Bardakci’s 30-yard volley onto the post in the first half. But Beach — who only has 64 senior club games to his name — also got down well to keep out a menacing Arda Guler free-kick after the break, among a host of other stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Beach wasn’t the sole reason for this Australian clean sheet, of course. In front of him, Harry Souttar made a match-high 12 defensive contributions and won four of his five aerial duels. Meanwhile, centre-back partner Cameron Burgess made two tackles and four clearances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    However, Turkey generated more than enough chances to take at least a point from this game, if not more. But time and again, they kept running into the same barrier, with Beach getting his angles right and pulling out the acrobatics to inspire a huge result for the Socceroos. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
