Richarlison did get a goal back midway through the second half but Tottenham were unable to complete the comeback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spurs still only need a point on the final day, but the pressure is now on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-yoast-seo-table-of-contents yoast-table-of-contents\"><h2>Table of contents<\/h2><ul><li><a href=\"#h-blues-win-midfield-battle\" data-level=\"3\">Blues win midfield battle<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-tottenham-s-woeful-attack\" data-level=\"3\">Tottenham&#8217;s woeful attack<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-cole-palmer-s-eden-hazard-throwback\" data-level=\"3\">Cole Palmer&#8217;s Eden Hazard throwback<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-blues-win-midfield-battle\">Blues win midfield battle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This game was really won &#8212; and lost &#8212; in midfield. Chelsea lined up in their usual 4-2-3-1, with Andrey Santos joining Moises Caicedo in the double pivot. Cole Palmer was in the No.10, with Enzo Fernandez on the right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tottenham&#8217;s 4-2-3-1 had Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentactur protecting the backline, and Conor Gallagher in the No.10. It&#8217;s a role he has played a lot under Roberto De Zerbi, and one Chelsea fans will be familiar with. But not really because of anything bad done on the pitch. There have been a few moments for criticism, but it&#8217;s mainly been due to a lack of trust. But the Brazilian brings a calmness to the Chelsea double pivot that they have missed this season with Fernandez in the No.10. Santos scored the winning goal, but his performance was so much more than just that. The Brazilian &#8212; who won&#8217;t be at the World Cup &#8212; completed all 39 of his attempted passes, with 55 touches on the ball. He completed five passes into the final third, won six duels and five tackles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next to him, Caicedo didn&#8217;t even need to attempt a tackle. But he made one interception, won four fouls and six duels. Caicedo also completed 51 passes and made six into the final third. It was his best performance in a Chelsea shirt for a while. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other side of the game, Bentacur also won six duels and possession five times. But he also lost possession 10 times, and only made two tackles. And Bentancur was the one caught flat-footed for Randal Kolo Muani&#8217;s admittedly terrible pass in the build up to Chelsea&#8217;s second goal. His partner, Joao Palhinha, only won four of his 10 duels and committed three fouls before being taken off after Chelsea went 2-0 up. Now, there is a big caveat of Tottenham&#8217;s injury problems keeping their key attackers out at various points of the season. But they still had the stars on the pitch to ask questions at Stamford Bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Richarlison led the line for Spurs in the absence of Dominic Solanke. He was flanked by Kolo Muani and Mathys Tel. The latter has been decent for Tottenham, but the former wouldn&#8217;t be in the side if it weren&#8217;t for the injuries to Xavi Simons and Mohammed Kudus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tottenham outscored Chelsea on Expected Goals at Stamford Bridge. Massively, too. They posted 1.72 xG from their nine shots, eight of which came from inside the box. Granted, Richarlison&#8217;s goal was responsible for 0.79 xG on its own, but they still created more than enough on paper to secure a second-ever Premier League win at Stamford Bridge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crucially, though, Tottenham only hit the target three times. Their first shot on target came just before the hour-mark, with Richarlison&#8217;s header an easy save for Robert Sanchez. They had had just two shots in total in the first half. And Richarlison&#8217;s goal was also the last shot on target Tottenham managed, going the final 17 minutes plus injury-time without truly testing Sanchez. This, despite boasting 45 final third entries, 23 touches in the opposition box and the higher possession. Tottenham had the chances. They just didn&#8217;t have the players to finish it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cole-palmer-s-eden-hazard-throwback\">Cole Palmer&#8217;s Eden Hazard throwback<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The buildup to this game was littered with references of the Battle of the Bridge. No, not the 1066 Battle of Stamford Bridge, but the 2016 meeting between Chelsea and Tottenham. Then, Chelsea ended Tottenham&#8217;s chances of winning the title with a 2-2 draw in what was their worst season for some time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eden Hazard scored the equaliser in that game, which Tottenham had led 2-0, in an almost-invisible season for the Belgian. Cole Palmer may not have been directly involved in a goal on Tuesday night, but he looked like a man determined to break Tottenham hearts a la Hazard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was Palmer&#8217;s strongest Chelsea performance for a while, in a season that hasn&#8217;t exactly gone to plan. He had three shots with 0.2 xG, only bettered by Santo&#8217;s 0.22 xG for his goal, and forced a good save from Antonin Kinsky in the first half. Palmer also made 10 passes into the final third, with only Fernandez (16) managing more for Chelsea, and completed 91.7% of his passes. He was always looking to get Chelsea up the pitch, and was involved in key attacking sequences. The Englishman also won possession four times, and won four fouls.
