Messi, however, boasts superior efficiency. Despite playing over 150 fewer matches, he has a higher goals-per-game ratio (0.79 to 0.74) and requires significantly fewer minutes to register a goal or an assist (72 minutes compared to Ronaldo\u2019s 87.6). If we remove penalties, Messi actually has more non-penalty goals (793) than Ronaldo (787), despite playing fewer games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The international stage: The final frontier<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For years, the great caveat against both men was their lack of international success compared to Pel\u00e9 and Maradona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ronaldo broke his duck first, leading Portugal to the Euro 2016 title. He followed it up with the UEFA Nations League in 2019. He became the all-time leading scorer in men’s international football, a monumental achievement of longevity and consistent excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Messi\u2019s international career was, for a long time, defined by heartbreak – losing the 2014 World Cup final and consecutive Copa Am\u00e9rica finals. But his late-career renaissance changed the narrative entirely.
