Their current Champions League campaign, in fact, is a testament to that. But within the 40% possession they prepared to have, Atleti tried to play. Both started on their own touchline, pressured right after recovering possession. They went long to get the team out of their own defending third and then went back to have more space to operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first goal was faster than the second, with Alvarez carrying the ball forward before sending Simeone through. Just not the way it usually does in a football game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Barcelona came back from half-time much better than Atletico, despite playing with 10 men. Other than that, they were always needlessly and wrecklessly rushing runs or forcing passes. Barca regained possession quite quickly and with little effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For perspective, less than 20 minutes into the second half, Diego Simeone was already planning two substitutions. He actually balanced with cross-pitch passes from right-to-left and left-to-right quite often. The idea was to stretch Barca&#8217;s defence and create openings inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And their build-ups from the left became a valuable weapon. Koke is much more techincally gifted than Marcos Llorente and was the one who set Julian Alvarez&#8217;s run in the lead-up to the free-kick that generated the red card and the goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for Barcelona, Lamine Yamal wreaking havoc is way too easy a prediction for us to brag about. Once again, he made Matteo Ruggeri&#8217;s and Koke&#8217;s lives hell and finished the game with eight successful take-ons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 18-year-old star also created their only big chance of the match, which Marcus Rashford failed to put away. Yamal assisted a further two shots, had four attempts of his own and won six fouls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rashford himself, and also Cancelo, were also valuable with their one-on-one play. They generated lots of advantages down the wings, but couldn&#8217;t capitalise or create anything truly concrete or clear-cut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, their set pieces, as we mentioned, also caused a lot of danger. Out of their seven corners, at least five led to chaos inside the box, shot attempts or both.
