He spent seven years with Zaragoza, winning the Copa del Rey and the Cup Winners&#8217; Cup, before moving to the Premier League in 1997.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Poyet played alongside a number of top flight superstars during spells at Chelsea and Tottenham, winning the FA Cup, Charity Shield and Uefa Super Cup while at Stamford Bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He turned his hand to management after hanging up his boots in 2006, but who were the standout stars from his playing days? Which Chelsea legend had muscles Poyet didn&#8217;t know existed, and who was so fast he needed a longer pitch?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-yoast-seo-table-of-contents yoast-table-of-contents\"><h2>Gus Poyet&#8217;s &#8216;perfect footballer&#8217;<\/h2><ul><li><a href=\"#h-left-foot\" data-level=\"2\">Left foot<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-right-foot\" data-level=\"2\">Right foot<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-heading\" data-level=\"2\">Heading<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-pace\" data-level=\"2\">Pace<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-strength\" data-level=\"2\">Strength<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-footballing-brain\" data-level=\"2\">Footballing brain<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-skills\" data-level=\"2\">Skills<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-mentality\" data-level=\"2\">Mentality<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-left-foot\">Left foot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is going to be tough,&#8221; he said. &#8220;This has to be between Christian Ziege, Gustavo Lopez or Kily (Gonzalez). I&#8217;m talking about Zaragoza. I&#8217;m going to go with Christian Ziege.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ziege and Poyet spent three years together at White Hart Lane, both signing in 2001 before departing in 2004. During this period they reached the League Cup final but were on the losing side, being defeated 2-1 by Blackburn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-right-foot\">Right foot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Gianfranco Zola,&#8221; he said. &#8220;That&#8217;s easy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pair played together at Stamford Bridge for four years, winning the FA Cup. They scored a combined 95 goals for the club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It [his right foot] was tremendous,&#8221; Poyet added. &#8220;I was so lucky to have him for four years. There were days we were at the training ground that he would do something amazing. I will say &#8216;Thank you, Gianfranco. You made my day. I can go home now and relax.&#8217; That was enough for today because it was tremendous.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-heading\">Heading<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If I need to pick one of the ones I played with then (Fernando) Morientes,&#8221; said Poyet, despite clearly itching to pick himself for this category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We played together and we scored, I think, 70% of the goals between him and me with the head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Sometimes when I&#8217;m coaching and I say something to offensive players, I normally say &#8216;Listen, it&#8217;s the only thing I&#8217;ve done well. So trust me. I don&#8217;t know about all things, but about heading the ball I know.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pace\">Pace<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I think I have to say Jesper Gronkjaer at Chelsea,&#8221; Poyet said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The first day he arrived at the training ground at Harlington, he made a sprint and the whole squad went &#8216;Oh my God!&#8217; You don&#8217;t imagine how quick he was. He was incredibly quick. He needed a longer pitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He was the kind of player where he didn&#8217;t need ability to dribble the ball, just kick it and run. And he will pass the fullback because the fullback couldn&#8217;t deal with him. He was tremendous.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-strength\">Strength<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Marcel Desailly,&#8221; was Poyet&#8217;s instant response. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Desailly spent six years at Chelsea, forming a formidable partnership with fellow Frenchman, Franck Leboeuf, before departing. He also won 116 caps for France at international level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If you see him with only underwear, you will realise that we don&#8217;t have some muscles,&#8221; he added. &#8220;He&#8217;s got muscles where you say &#8216;What is that?! I don&#8217;t have that. I don&#8217;t have that muscle.&#8217; Unbelievable.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-footballing-brain\">Footballing brain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I need to go with the little one, Gianfranco again,&#8221; answered Poyet, before swiftly changing his mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We can put Francesco (Enzo Francescoli) for the intelligence and Gianfranco for the skills. Gianfranco had the ability to do things with the ball &#8212; to bring it down and to play and to hit it &#8212; he had an ability that was special. Francesco was more about understanding the game and finding the spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I had to play really deep for Uruguay, and every time I was tired and I check to pass the ball, he was always free. And I&#8217;m thinking &#8216;how does he do it?&#8217; He knows that I&#8217;m going to look up at this time and he&#8217;s always free and you were able to give him the ball. He was always reading the game, Francesco, before the ball was getting to him.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-skills\">Skills<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When I played with Gianfranco Zola, he made me a better player,&#8221; said Poyet, who clearly ranked Zola among his best-ever team-mates. &#8220;I was a better player because of him, and that shows you the understanding that he had in the game. It was tremendous. So when you feel that from a teammate that you are better because of that, it means that something is special.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mentality\">Mentality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We had a few. I&#8217;m going to try to find the right mentality, not the crazy one,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I had a few options, probably in Spain, but I think like a special player, a connection, knowing the game and having the right mentality and stepping up in important moments, I will go with Roberto Di Matteo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He has something special that most people don&#8217;t. In finals, you will go into a final and you know he will score at Wembley. That knowing that things will happen. He became a manager and won the Champions League, obviously, because he had that mentality, that awareness of what is going on around him.
