He also lifted the Uefa Cup Winners&#8217; Cup with the Gunners, having broken through the academy. Parlour spent the final three years of his professional career with Middlesbrough and Hull City. He also played 10 times for England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Squawka gave Parlour eight different attributes that we believe are all key to a footballer, and building a player in general. These are: left foot, right foot, heading, pace, strength, football brain, skills and mentality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-yoast-seo-table-of-contents yoast-table-of-contents\"><h2>Jump to:<\/h2><ul><li><a href=\"#h-left-foot\" data-level=\"2\">Left foot<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-right-foot\" data-level=\"2\">Right foot<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-heading\" data-level=\"2\">Heading<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-pace\" data-level=\"2\">Pace<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-strength\" data-level=\"2\">Strength<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-footballing-brain\" data-level=\"2\">Footballing brain<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-skills\" data-level=\"2\">Skills<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-mentality\" data-level=\"2\">Mentality<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-left-foot\">Left foot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;d probably say Ashley Cole,&#8221; Parlour answered after a little pondering.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cole joined Arsenal midway through Parlour&#8217;s time at the club and really broke into the first team in 2000. The pair played 104 times together in total, winning four major trophies for Arsenal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cole is widely regarded as one of the best left-backs of his generation and arguably the best England has ever produced. He did leave Arsenal in controversial circumstances, joining Chelsea in 2006 having been found guilty of making contact for a possible move without informing the Gunners the year earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-right-foot\">Right foot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Parlour&#8217;s answer for this was pretty instant, saying: &#8220;I would probably say (David) Beckham.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He was a striker&#8217;s dream, do you know what I mean? Because every time he got it out of his feet, you know where the ball&#8217;s going, into a certain area where strikers can make their runs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He didn&#8217;t really have to go past the left-back, he just got half a yard and he whipped it into really dangerous areas. If you asked (Ruud) van Nistelrooy and all the forwards he played with, they probably knew exactly when to make their runs. As soon as he moved the ball out of his feet, they knew where the ball was going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;And as a striker, you may the runs, you get half a yard across your defender, then you&#8217;ve got a chance to score. Simple as that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s why he was probably a dream to play with, if you&#8217;re a striker. If you have too many touches, you don&#8217;t know when the ball&#8217;s going to go, and you make your run and then the ball doesn&#8217;t come in.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-heading\">Heading<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This one gave Parlour a bit of thought, but eventually led him to a familiar name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You probably have to go with a centre-half, aren&#8217;t you? I&#8217;ll just put Tony Adams up there,&#8221; Parlour said<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He can score a goal as well from a corner, he always had a good leap and he was always solid. In those days, you obviously didn&#8217;t play out as much from the back. So it was a lot more about hitting the ball to the striker. So heading was very important from a defender&#8217;s point of view.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adams is a popular choice, having also been picked for his heading by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/features\/jermaine-pennant-interview-perfect-footballer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jermaine Pennant<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/features\/jeremie-aladiare-interview-perfect-footballer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jeremie Aliadiere<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pace\">Pace<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Pace, I think I&#8217;m going to go Nicolas Anelka,&#8221; Parlour answered pretty quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He was probably one of the quickest players I&#8217;ve seen. When he was 18, 19, over five yards he was electric. A lot of people probably had nightmares, centre-halves playing against him, because he can give you a couple of yards and still get past you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;A lot of people would have said Thierry (Henry) as well, but Ashley Cole was quick over five yards. Thierry was more of a 200-metre runner, once he got into his stride. Whereas Nicolas Anelka was a really sharp 18, 19-year-old. He was electric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He was a tremendous player. In that &#8217;98 season, I was getting kicked out of the season because he was different class.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-strength\">Strength<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Someone like Sol Campbell, I would say. He was so strong. Not many people got past Sol, so I would probably say Sol Campbell.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parlour and Campbell played alongside each other for Arsenal and England, though there were just a few shared appearances for the national team. Campbell joined Arsenal in 2001, with Parlour leaving the Gunners in 2004 &#8212; giving them three season with each other. But that was enough time for them to rack up 83 joined Arsenal appearances, including 21 in the league in 2003-04 as the Gunners went Invincible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Campbell was another popular pick among former Arsenal players Aliadiere and Pennant, with the latter joking that the Englishman&#8217;s thigh was bigger than his body width! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-footballing-brain\">Footballing brain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Has to be Dennis Bergkamp. Definitely,&#8221; Parlour answered pretty quickly, agreeing with Pennant&#8217;s choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He was different class, Dennis. If you ask Ian Wright, Thierry Henty and all those sorts of guys, how many goals they scored. A lot of it was down to Dennis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Dennis was always one step ahead of everybody. I played against some good players, who were very good. Jan Molby back in the day, and people like that, who was very technically on the ball. He didn&#8217;t move a lot, but he was a very good passer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;But Dennis was a different class. So, for me, Dennis Bergkamp all day long.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-skills\">Skills<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Skills, I&#8217;ve got to go Thierry Henry. He was amazing, how he had learned to just pass the ball into the back of the net. He never panicked, never. The skills he had were just unbelievable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Dribbling, he was a finisher and an amazing player to play with. I wouldn&#8217;t want to play against him every week, put it that way. So he would certainly be up there with the best, if not the best.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parlour played 169 matches alongside Henry, with the pair combining for six goals. Parlour set up Henry four times, with the Frenchman assisting two of the Englishman&#8217;s goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mentality\">Mentality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Mentality, winning mentality, I think we had a lot of players with winning mentality because we had to,&#8221; Parlour pondered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m going to try and do different players, because it makes it better. I will probably go out of Patrick (Vieira) and Martin Keown. But I&#8217;ll go with Patrick, because he was skipper for many years after Tony Adams and he was a top man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Patrick never knew when he was beaten. Again, during that Invincible season, we were losing games and we always seemed to come back. And that&#8217;s credit to the squad really, and the players out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;But Patrick was really good after Tony left in 2002, to carry on from his mentor as captain, he was very good. And he was always a winner in training.
