Mason Mount’s future at Chelsea is currently in doubt and there is every chance that the Englishman could leave the club this summer.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mount was only recently one of the success stories of Chelsea’s academy, coming through the ranks — via loans at Vitesse and Derby — to be a mainstay in their team under Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel, assisting the winning goal in the 2021 Champions League final.<\/p>\n

Last season he was by far and away their best player, scoring 11 goals and providing 10 assists in the Premier League alone, one of just three players across the whole division to hit double figures in both, alongside Mohamed Salah and Jarrod Bowen. However, this season Mount has struggled for form and fitness, with just five goal involvements in 1,656 minutes in the Premier League, faltering alongside most of his Chelsea teammate.<\/p>\n

Mount has always been something of a marmite figure, especially among Chelsea fans, with some believing he only gets a spot in the team because he is English and came through the academy — given more chances than foreign signings who may be better. However, there are other Chelsea fans who believe they know how much Mount is worth to the club, and it seems the man himself does too.<\/p>\n

The biggest reason behind Mount’s potential departure this summer is the fact that he is out of contract in 2024, and the club have yet to agree a new deal for him, reportedly due to the Englishman’s wage demands, wanting a bigger increase to be more in line with the rest of the squad. If Chelsea cannot come to an agreement, they may decide to sell this summer rather than risk letting Mount go on a free transfer.<\/p>\n

So, where could Mount go?<\/p>\n

Manchester United<\/h2>\n

Manchester United have recently emerged as the favourites to sign Mason Mount this summer, so much so that Sky Bet are offering odds of 1\/1<\/a> for Mount to join the Red Devils before 3rd September 2023. According to reports, Man Utd have already made a number of inquiries over Mount’s availability this season and are hopeful given how his Chelsea career is turning out, with some reporting talks between the two clubs have already opened.<\/p>\n

How badly do Man Utd need Mount?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Man Utd’s midfield is an interesting case as they spent most of last summer trying to sign Frenkie de Jong as their holding midfield man, only to end up with Casemiro. Alongside him, Bruno Fernandes has slotted into a more conservative role, but the third midfield slot has been something of a problem. Players have tried and failed to make it into Ten Hag’s central midfield three, and the role can often change depending on the opponents (either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1). At the moment, Man Utd’s most pressing need is a box-to-box midfielder who can carry the ball up the pitch with his feet — not necessarily his passing — and not necessarily a pressing midfielder, which Mount is.<\/p>\n

Who loses out?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marcel Sabitzer is only on loan at Man Utd but any move for Mount could impact whether the Red Devils try to make his stay permanent, especially as the Englishman would fill the role Sabitzer has been doing this season. Also potentially in danger is Christian Eriksen, who has struggled at times this season, and Fred, despite the Brazilian’s impressive cameos. There are also reports that Scott McTominay could be on the chopping block to fund a move for Mount.<\/p>\n

How Man Utd would line up if they signed Mount<\/strong><\/p>\n

Liverpool<\/h2>\n

One of the first names to be linked with Mount earlier in the season was Liverpool, and many had them as a good destination for the Englishman. Although he is subject to interest from other teams, Mount reportedly remains a key target for Liverpool who are looking to shift their midfield slightly this summer, and he’s 3\/1 to join the Reds with Sky Bet<\/a>.<\/p>\n

How badly do Liverpool need Mount?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Aside from the troubles in replacing Sadio Mane, many people believe Liverpool’s failures this season and last has been their midfield. While the Reds have bolstered their squad elsewhere, the midfield trio remained largely the same and without the evolution, Liverpool faltered. This summer will see James Milner leave, while Naby Keita and Arthur have also struggled. Mount is pretty much Jurgen Klopp’s perfect midfielder, a pressing man who will run tirelessly in defence and attack, key to the cause.<\/p>\n

Who loses out?<\/strong><\/p>\n

As mentioned, Liverpool’s midfield is in a bit of a weird situation right now, as no one has truly shone across the campaign — not even Fabinho. But the Brazilian has his place in the Liverpool team pretty much locked down, meaning Mount fights with the likes of Thiago, Jordan Henderson, Keita, Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones for one of the two other midfield slots. Mount has legs on a few of them, and experience on the others.<\/p>\n

How Liverpool would line up if they signed Mount<\/strong><\/p>\n

Arsenal<\/h2>\n

There could also be the potential for a stay in London, making a move slightly north to Arsenal, where Champions League football will be being played next season. According to reports, the Gunners are hoping to make Mount one of three big-name signing this summer (potentially alongside his best friend?), as they focus on the midfield — one of their weaker areas of the pitch despite some of the quality on display. Arsenal are currently 4\/1 with Sky Bet to sign Mount this summer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

How badly do Arsenal need Mount?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Arsenal will be a bit of a strange case this summer as they have a great team built, but you feel there are still some areas which could do with some work as they hope to get over the line in the Premier League title race next season. Granit Xhaka will leave the club this summer and Thomas Partey has been struggling for fitness, while Jorginho was only ever a short-term fix, meaning new names are needed. While he is nowhere near the attacking threat of Martin Odegaard, Mount can suit Arsenal’s midfield in a Xhaka-like role, as the Swiss got up the pitch more this season. And, of course, Mount can do it better than Xhaka — but he would need someone like Rice, or Partey (to stick with players at Arsenal right now) to hold the fort.<\/p>\n\n

Who loses out?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Emile Smith Rowe would be the biggest loser of a Mount move to Arsenal, as he would have to fight it out with his compatriot for one of the deeper midfield roles — because no one is displacing Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli. Fabio Vieira will also be under a lot of pressure to perform when he is given the chance, knowing Arsenal have a ready-made Premier League star they can easily rely on.<\/p>\n

How Arsenal would line up if they signed Mount<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bayern Munich<\/h2>\n

Of course, Mount has also been loosely linked with a move to Bayern Munich, though that is more due to the man in charge than any concrete evidence of interest. Mount played his best football for Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel, adaptable to most formations and tactics the German boss opted for, whether it was a deeper role or further up the pitch. As it is more speculation than concrete interest right now, Bayern are understandably 22\/1 with Sky Bet to sign Mount this summer<\/a>. But it’s still an interesting prospect.<\/p>\n

How badly do Bayern Munich need Mount?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another reason why Mount moving to Bayern may be unlikely is because they don’t really have room for a player of his profile right now, unless Tuchel oversees a switch in the summer. Mount isn’t as defensively strong, or as good at passing as Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka, while he isn’t as good in attack as Jamal Musiala. But if Tuchel wanted more pressing from his wingers, there could be a home for Mount there, as he operated that role under both Tuchel and Lampard at Chelsea. Or you could switch him and Musiala freely in-game for a dual threat.<\/p>\n

Who loses out?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marcel Sabitzer again? Should the Austrian return to Bayern and Mount join, he’d find it even harder to make his way into the XI than he already was. Bayern’s midfield is such a tough one to break into, though this may also hinge on whether Kimmich stays — for now we’re assuming he does. There are also the wingers who could miss out due to Mount if Tuchel were to play him further up the pitch, like Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane.<\/p>\n
