And there&#8217;s some epic matches to look forward to including two of Germany&#8217;s hottest coaches facing off, a rematch of a Champions League classic, and the most decorated side in the competition&#8217;s history taking on its most refreshing newcomers.<\/p>\n<p>But who are the winners and losers of the 2020\/21 Champions League draw? The 13-times champions of Europe just seem to find a way to get the results they need. This season they were rubbish for more than half of their games in the group stages, showing up precisely twice as they dominated Inter and Borussia Monchengladbach, and this, incredibly, was enough to top the group.<\/p>\n<p>Their reward for basically passing the test while hungover off just one night of revision? A tie against Atalanta. That would have been a tricky prospect but the Italian club seem to be going through a bit of a crisis right now as manager Gian Piero Gasperini and star player Alejandro &#8220;Papu&#8221; Gomez have fallen out, to the extent that the latter is expected to leave the club in January.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">?? Well, Frank Lampard is going to need something similar from his Frenchman in February because the Blues drew the shortest of short straws and will face Diego Simeone&#8217;s Atl\u00e9tico Madrid.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Atleti haven&#8217;t been all that great in the Champions League this season but they are a phenomenal side who are flying high atop La Liga. It doesn&#8217;t tend to end well. Marco Rose&#8217;s side do appear to be exactly the kind of tactically aware yet non-elite opponent that routinely gives City problems (look at Lyon last year) but the difference here, and the reason why City have been picked as winner of the draw, is that Gladbach can&#8217;t see things through.<\/p>\n<p>The Germans were comfortably the best side in their group yet their only two wins came against Shakhtar Donetsk. They conceded late goals against Inter and Real Madrid to drop points early on and then capitulated shamefully in their last two games. Man City&#8217;s major problem is their lack of resolve under pressure but they may have finally found a side even more brittle than they are.<\/p>\n<p>This will be one hell of a tie with lots of attacking and goals galore but don&#8217;t count on Gladbach holding their nerve.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/go\/smarkets-sqm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SBK<\/a> Champions League 2020\/21 outright winner odds:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Manchester City:<\/strong> 18.18%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gladbach:<\/strong> 0.67%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Loser: Lazio<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Lazio fought so hard to get into the knockout rounds, battling against their own inadequacies to pick up the points they needed to make the round of 16. They never lost, albeit they won only twice. All that, just to get fed to the Bayern Munich juggernaut.<\/p>\n<p>Look, it had to happen to someone. One of those poor runners-up was being handed a guaranteed L when the draw came up Bayern, none of them had what it takes to beat the Bavarians (an organised back-line, solid midfield and pace on the counter) so one of them had to lose, and it just so happened to be Lazio. It&#8217;s not that they&#8217;re bad, but they&#8217;re obviously the least good of the teams left. Even with the Blaugrana in something of a state, having to face Leo Messi is never an easy ride. Not to mention that PSG will head into the clash with memories still stinging from the sensational 6-1 <em>remontada<\/em> that Barcelona dropped on them in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Sure since then they acquired Neymar and Kylian Mbapp\u00e9, but who knows if Neymar will even be fit and Mbapp\u00e9 can&#8217;t do it all himself. Meanwhile, they face a Barcelona side loaded with talent if not the acumen to use it; although Ronald Koeman is exactly the kind of tactical dullard that someone like Thomas Tuchel has problems with because he&#8217;s trying to out-think a guy who is running off instinct and vibes. And while they&#8217;re a mess right now, who knows how they&#8217;ll be playing come February?
