Meanwhile, in Spain, only Atletico Madrid have managed to break the Real Madrid\u2013Barcelona stronghold since 2004.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But that doesn\u2019t mean there haven\u2019t been shocks. Teams from outside the usual set of contenders who have defied all odds to win their league titles. As well as the ecstasy that comes with winning the title, these teams were rewarded for their exploits with a route into the Champions League.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The most recent example? Union Saint-Gilloise, who ended a 90-year wait to win the Belgian league title last season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Below, we\u2019ve taken a look at 16 outsiders who won their domestic titles and how they managed in the Champions League.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Blackburn Rovers (1995)<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1141697\" src=\"https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14120306\/1141690_1141690_alan-shearer-blackburn-champions-leauge-1995.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"689\" height=\"457\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14120306\/1141690_1141690_alan-shearer-blackburn-champions-leauge-1995.jpg 689w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14120306\/1141690_1141690_alan-shearer-blackburn-champions-leauge-1995-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14120306\/1141690_1141690_alan-shearer-blackburn-champions-leauge-1995-66x44.jpg 66w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 689px) 100vw, 689px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bank-rolled by local industrial magnate Jack Walker, Blackburn Rovers went on a spending spree to challenge and beat Manchester United to the Premier League title in 1995. They headed to Europe with their victorious team intact but only managed a win and a draw from their six group games, <strong>finishing bottom of Group B behind Spartak Moscow, Legia Warsaw and Rosenborg<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>With only title-winners involved, Blackburn&#8217;s exit meant the Premier League had no team in the knockout stages of the Champions League, something that has not happened since.<\/p>\n<h2>Nantes (1995)<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1141698\" src=\"https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14120952\/1141690_1141690_nantes-juventus-champions-league-1996.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"618\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14120952\/1141690_1141690_nantes-juventus-champions-league-1996.jpg 618w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14120952\/1141690_1141690_nantes-juventus-champions-league-1996-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14120952\/1141690_1141690_nantes-juventus-champions-league-1996-66x48.jpg 66w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Jean-Claude Suaudeau initially feared that his side would struggle to stay out of the relegation battle in 1994\/95. Then they surprised everyone, including themselves, to win the Ligue 1 title that season, 10 points ahead of runners-up Lyon.<\/p>\n<p>A year later they headed into the Champions League and came second in their group behind Greek side Panathinaikos, with two wins and three draws from six games, leaving Porto and Aalborg to founder in third and fourth place, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>In the quarter-finals, Nantes came up against Group B winners Spartak Moscow and won 4-2 on aggregate to set up <strong>a daunting semi-final clash with Juventus<\/strong>. Unfortunately, the Old Lady proved too much for the French side, winning 4-3 on aggregate en route to beating Ajax in the final. But they were promoted at the first time of asking and went on to win the Bundesliga title upon their return to the top-flight, finishing two points clear of Bayern Munich and securing passage to the Champions League the following year. They didn&#8217;t just make up the numbers in Europe either.<\/p>\n<p>After topping a group that featured former European champions Benfica and a Bobby Robson-managed PSV Eindhoven, they <strong>came up against Bayern again in the quarter-finals, losing 6-0 on aggregate<\/strong>. The dream was over but memories remain of how one of the original founding members of the Bundesliga came back from relegation in 1996 to win the German title and take on Europe&#8217;s best. These memories are cherished even more given Kaiserslautern&#8217;s current position in the third tier of German football.<\/p>\n<h2>Genk (1999)<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1121258\" src=\"https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2019\/12\/18160022\/PA-48937354.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"5568\" height=\"3712\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2019\/12\/18160022\/PA-48937354.jpg 5568w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2019\/12\/18160022\/PA-48937354-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2019\/12\/18160022\/PA-48937354-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2019\/12\/18160022\/PA-48937354-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2019\/12\/18160022\/PA-48937354-66x44.jpg 66w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 5568px) 100vw, 5568px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Just 11 years after being founded in a merger between two other Belgian clubs, Genk secured their first top-flight title, beating Club Brugge and Anderlecht, who were forced to finished second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, victory only granted the champions a place in the qualification rounds and they never made it to the group stages, <strong>losing to Maribor of Slovenia in the second round play-off<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Deportivo de La Coruna (2000)<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1141709\" src=\"https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14122622\/1141690_1141690_diego-tristan-deportivo-2001-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1710\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14122622\/1141690_1141690_diego-tristan-deportivo-2001-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14122622\/1141690_1141690_diego-tristan-deportivo-2001-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14122622\/1141690_1141690_diego-tristan-deportivo-2001-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14122622\/1141690_1141690_diego-tristan-deportivo-2001-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14122622\/1141690_1141690_diego-tristan-deportivo-2001-1536x1026.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14122622\/1141690_1141690_diego-tristan-deportivo-2001-2048x1368.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14122622\/1141690_1141690_diego-tristan-deportivo-2001-66x44.jpg 66w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Spanish football looked set for an exciting new future at the turn of the century as the league title went to a team in the far north-western region of Galicia for the very first time in the competition&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n<p>The Deportivo side that claimed the championship were a cult team featuring the likes of Roy Makaay, Victor Sanchez and Djalminha, and they became something of a bogey side in Europe following the signing of more memorable players such as Diego Tristan.<\/p>\n<p>After finishing top in both group stages (back when the competition featured two) ahead\u00a0of\u00a0Panathinaikos, Hamburg and Juventus and then Galatasaray, Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, conjuring up 10 points against both sets of teams, they finally <strong>lost out to Leeds United, 3-2 on aggregate, in the quarter-finals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Boavista (2001)<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1141711\" src=\"https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14122819\/1141690_1141690_boavista-manchester-united-2002.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1022\" height=\"826\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14122819\/1141690_1141690_boavista-manchester-united-2002.jpg 1022w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14122819\/1141690_1141690_boavista-manchester-united-2002-300x242.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14122819\/1141690_1141690_boavista-manchester-united-2002-768x621.jpg 768w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/05\/14122819\/1141690_1141690_boavista-manchester-united-2002-66x53.jpg 66w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1022px) 100vw, 1022px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Only the second team to beat the big three &#8211; Benfica, Porto and Sporting &#8211; to a top-flight title in Portuguese football history, Boavista became champions by just a single point in 2001 playing a feisty, fully-committed style of play that ensured their players won every battle they could out on the pitch.<\/p>\n<p>Like Deportivo over the border, they had to contend with a format featuring two group stages, finishing as runners-up in their first just behind Liverpool, and ahead of Borussia Dortmund and Dynamo Kiev, but losing <strong>out in the second group as they finished third<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet there was no shame in the Portuguese minnows falling at that hurdle. His team won their first seven games and then never looked back, remaining atop of the Russian Premier League table for the remainder of the season as they won their first-ever Russian top-flight title.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the mismatch in fixture calendars, Rubin Kazan entered the Champions League in the 2009\/10 season, <strong>finishing third in Group F behind Barcelona and eventual winners Inter<\/strong>, but ahead of Dynamo Kiev.<\/p>\n<p>They retained their Russian title and returned to the big stage again in 2010\/11, only to end up with the same result: <strong>third in a group won by Barcelona<\/strong> but this time behind Copenhagen and above Panathinaikos. Sevilla were next to fall despite winning 2-1 in the first leg (a result that saw Claudio Ranieri sacked and replaced by Craig Shakespeare); Leicester won the second game 2-0 and Shakespeare became one of only four English managers to take charge of a Champions League knockout game, the others being Sir Bobby Robson, Harry Redknapp and Frank Lampard.<\/p>\n<p>But their journey would be ended in the quarter-finals by another Spanish team, unable to cut through a stubborn Atletico Madrid defence, <strong>losing 2-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals<\/strong>. After the game, Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone praised Leicester for their efforts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel emotion, pride and hope after such a tough game against a team which gave us so much pleasure to compete against, a team that did not throw in the towel and kept us at arms&#8217; length,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After a game like that it&#8217;s easy to forget we are in the semi-finals. It was the night of pure football we had envisaged, with a marvellous atmosphere against a team that fought until the end. But in 2018\/19, Greek football was all about another team: PAOK.<\/p>\n<p>Having finished runners-up to AEK the season before, PAOK went one step further to win the Greek Super League just their third title, finishing five points clear of Olympiacos. Domestically, they managed a decent run in the Turkish Cup, reaching the semi-finals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bayer-leverkusen-2024\"><strong>Bayer Leverkusen (2024)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bayer Leverkusen enjoyed a historic 2023\/24 season, winning the Bundesliga title for the first time in the club\u2019s history and also lifting the DFB-Pokal. They came agonisingly close to a famous treble but fell short in the Europa League final, losing to Atalanta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leverkusen started the following 2024\/25 season on a high by defeating VfB Stuttgart to win the DFL-Supercup. In the Bundesliga, they remained tough to beat, suffering just three defeats, but ultimately finished 13 points behind champions Bayern Munich, while their DFB-Pokal title defence ended in the semi-finals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the newly formatted Champions League, Leverkusen finished a respectable 6th in the league phase, recording impressive wins over both Milan clubs, but their European run ended abruptly in the last-16 with a 5-0 aggregate defeat to domestic foes Bayern Munich.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the biggest complaints about modern football is the predictability of the top leagues.
