What happens next is anyone\u2019s guess.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With elite football in <span id=\"urn:enhancement-276d8a74\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/england\">England<\/span> suspended until at least April 4 due to the coronavirus outbreak, the sport has been left in a state of flux and no-one knows when \u2014 or if \u2014 the 2019\/20 season will resume.<\/p>\n<p>The crisis means fans are now in limbo and unanswered questions will continue to go unanswered (for now at least). Will <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5dfa1a75\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/liverpool_f-c\">Liverpool<\/span> win their first top-flight title for 30 years? Who will get relegated? And will Marcelo Bielsa finally guide Leeds back to the promised land?<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"background-color: transparent; display: block; padding: 0; max-width: 700px;\" title=\"Audioboom player\" src=\"https:\/\/embeds.audioboom.com\/posts\/7529440\/embed\/v4\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>There have been suggestions the Premier League should be declared null and void, by West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady no less. Fancy that. This would naturally lead to huge backlash and a knock-on effect that could seriously damage the integrity of the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ddc7a87\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/premier_league_2\">Premier League<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>But, there is another top figure who has been making considerable noise, in the form of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d78c638a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/brighton___hove_albion_fc\">Brighton<\/span> chief executive Paul Barber. He has come up with a 22-team blueprint for the top flight that he believes could resolve a number of issues should the season be scrapped due to the Covid-19 virus.<\/p>\n<p>Barber\u2019s somewhat radical plan would mean that no club is relegated from the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-bedf2f2e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/premier_league_2\">Premier League<\/span> this season; there would be a 22-team campaign in 2020\/21, with four clubs relegated; and only two clubs would gain promotion from the Championship next term to balance the equilibrium for 2021\/22 to allow the top flight to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/51889682\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8216;revert back to the current system&#8217;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, such a suggestion seems bonkers on paper, but if things keep up, this may be one of the only viable options. That would mean a 22-team campaign, with two clubs from the Championship making the step up to fill the remaining two slots.<\/p>\n<p>The current top-two in the second tier, Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion, would be those teams, meaning <span>Fulham, Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Preston\u00a0would all miss out on promotion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1136849 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/03\/16123459\/1136819_1136819_Screen-Shot-2020-03-16-at-12.34.40.png\" alt=\"22-team Premier League season | Squawka Football Manager\" width=\"2970\" height=\"1006\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/03\/16123459\/1136819_1136819_Screen-Shot-2020-03-16-at-12.34.40.png 2970w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/03\/16123459\/1136819_1136819_Screen-Shot-2020-03-16-at-12.34.40-300x102.png 300w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/03\/16123459\/1136819_1136819_Screen-Shot-2020-03-16-at-12.34.40-1024x347.png 1024w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/03\/16123459\/1136819_1136819_Screen-Shot-2020-03-16-at-12.34.40-768x260.png 768w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/03\/16123459\/1136819_1136819_Screen-Shot-2020-03-16-at-12.34.40-1536x520.png 1536w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/03\/16123459\/1136819_1136819_Screen-Shot-2020-03-16-at-12.34.40-2048x694.png 2048w, https:\/\/media.squawka.com\/images\/en\/2020\/03\/16123459\/1136819_1136819_Screen-Shot-2020-03-16-at-12.34.40-66x22.png 66w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2970px) 100vw, 2970px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of course, the restructure is unlikely to sit well with the likes of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2e116d7e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/pep_guardiola\">Pep Guardiola<\/span> and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9b16e9e1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/jurgen_klopp\">Jurgen Klopp<\/span>, who have both previously voiced concerns about the number of domestic games being played out across a single campaign, with the former even calling for the League Cup to be scrapped to ease fixture congestion.<\/p>\n<p>A 22-team <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7dd1eda9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/premier_league_2\">Premier League<\/span> campaign means four extra games would have to be played, moving from the standard 38 we recognise today to an eye-watering 42 matches.<\/p>\n<p>Certainly fans wouldn&#8217;t be opposed to more action, with a number of mouthwatering fixtures on offer, including a West Midlands derby between West Brom and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-72d71ce1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/aston_villa\">Aston Villa<\/span>, as well as the Roses rivalry between Leeds and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-528b7cac\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/manchester_united\">Manchester United<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>There would also be a tasty\u00a0West Yorkshire derby between Leeds and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9748bd56\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/sheffield_united\">Sheffield United<\/span>, not to mention the Whites versus <span id=\"urn:enhancement-42726349\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span>, which has proven a very feisty and tempestuous affair over the years. Who went down? Well, it was a gruelling 42-game campaign, but neither West Brom or Leeds suffered the fateful drop in their maiden campaigns back amongst the elite.<\/p>\n<p>That means four present-day <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7f760014\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/premier_league_2\">Premier League<\/span> clubs faced relegation, but interestingly, none of the current bottom three \u2014 <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b377391b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/norwich_city\">Norwich<\/span>, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-cf2ea63c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/aston_villa\">Aston Villa<\/span> and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4572a4fb\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/bournemouth_2\">Bournemouth<\/span> \u2014 were among those to drop down.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In fact, high-flying <span id=\"urn:enhancement-84a29aca\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/sheffield_united\">Sheff Utd<\/span> finished rock bottom and collected the wooden spoon, while <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9e019118\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/crystal_palace_fc\">Crystal Palace<\/span>, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f0b56228\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/west_ham\">West Ham<\/span> and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-22820169\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/ralph_hasenhuttl\">Southampton<\/span> were the other unfortunate teams to occupy the relegation spaces.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The two promoted clubs from the Championship were Swansea City and Huddersfield Town, taking the 2021\/22 Premier League season back to the current 20-team format, with the latter offering another local derby with Leeds going forward.<\/p>\n<p>There will be a bittersweet feeling for\u00a0Slaven Bilic as he managed to keep the Baggies in the top flight, while West Ham &#8211;
