{"id":1131541,"date":"2020-02-21T12:14:21","date_gmt":"2020-02-21T12:14:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/?p=1131541"},"modified":"2020-02-21T12:14:21","modified_gmt":"2020-02-21T12:14:21","slug":"frank-lampard-chelsea-spurs-problems","status":"publish","type":"features","link":"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/features\/frank-lampard-chelsea-spurs-problems\/","title":{"rendered":"Frank Lampard must remedy &#8216;considerable flaw&#8217; to stop Chelsea&#8217;s season unravelling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>It&#8217;s the middle of February and <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-vsokyk5trb3ms03qcfl1yv6mz0s6rueu\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span> have won just one <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-8ldcntwkh2914fz0y1tuss6tysw3u611\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/premier_league_2\">Premier League<\/span> game in 2020.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alright they&#8217;ve also picked up two wins in the FA Cup against lower league Nottingham Forest and Hull City, but in the top division a 3-0 win over <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-5ssbkedetbo49kz4tertdrjtoejsinwj\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/burnley_fc\">Burnley<\/span> is their only victory across the six league games they&#8217;ve so far played this year.<\/p>\n<p>That is poor, and although they ended 2019 with an impressive comeback victory over <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-qj5gt3v901fqszov7htw0hkiqcxw0bic\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/arsenal_f-c\">Arsenal<\/span>, it&#8217;s not like they closed out the year with a string of wins either. In fact, <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-oo922z294w645a7mlvu43i2mr91bqrr9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span> haven&#8217;t won consecutive games since the start of November.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"background-color: transparent; display: block; padding: 0; max-width: 700px;\" title=\"Audioboom player\" src=\"https:\/\/embeds.audioboom.com\/posts\/7510326\/embed\/v4?image_option=fullsq\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Roy Keane said earlier this week that <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-3hdasnqmiip2ypxwnemxe7bpk4a0uocu\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/frank_lampard\">Frank Lampard<\/span>&#8216;s Honeymoon period is over, and when you look at <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-s57pjzju9cwjtekozywrtjo4lew9g2mq\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea&#8217;s<\/span> performances this season it&#8217;s hard to argue with that.<\/p>\n<p>They began it in rocky form, but then they won six league games in a row between losing 2-1 to <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-hg4d5pp14k77ldvlpvzcagc1bat85x64\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/liverpool_f-c\">Liverpool<\/span> in September and suffering that same scoreline against <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-q2zyoxd67xonl59fb8w4avfma2rtr4fb\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/manchester_city\">Man City<\/span> in November. During that autumnal timeframe, the <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-u6igpssyqagi0zhjqaw4uqrntlqhr2q8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Blues<\/span> also\u00a0picked up a huge away win in the Champions League, beating Ajax in Amsterdam.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, however, they&#8217;ve been far less consistent. In fact they&#8217;ve won just four out of 13 league games since <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-7cqro61ktdpy7x54wjowxf4jh8jiw6r3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/manchester_city\">Man City<\/span> ended their winning run. Worse still is that just three of those games have been draws, leaving them with a whopping six defeats.<\/p>\n<p>Only the staggering incompetence of <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-xsecgzji49qio2417edk9ksgetimnkn6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/manchester_united\">Manchester United<\/span>, <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-afj0ba3rafummup85hehbjwy1sxv8izn\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/arsenal_f-c\">Arsenal<\/span> and Tottenham Hotspur have kept <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-f52sltws6j93k941dqqpizrt1klhvot8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span> as the prime candidate for a top-four position. In any other season they&#8217;d be mid-table by now, but as things stand, they cling to a slender advantage. The <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-qtvsjo0jsktjezivhy8mj65e42juptjr\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Blues<\/span> haven&#8217;t lost both league games against United since 1988, yet they have done so this season by an aggregate scoreline of 6-0.<\/p>\n<p>After each game <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-21zzk6f0zdci6cq9ch6maba5hy9r7c7l\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/frank_lampard\">Lampard<\/span> said that the result didn&#8217;t reflect the tone of the match. Well if not, what exactly is <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-gxfmpspa4fp6zg81epg8jxbz5i91fcbh\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span>&#8216;s problem then? Obviously the primary one, as exemplified by the United games, is scoring goals (or not scoring goals as it were).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not that <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-q4j1rr9i4yi5xmu8b6j3k3f9og2x2hlc\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span> can&#8217;t score, their haul of 43 is the joint-fourth best in the <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-aluydwhtl0ae21q5ok0a9dzh3xr4bsy8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/premier_league_2\">Premier League<\/span>, but the problem is that they don&#8217;t score enough for the style of play they employ. Under <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-2zr10e6tnrczmqcmdpk038ba4as30j4w\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/frank_lampard\">Lampard<\/span>, <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-timxdtl9nzcrnlaxszp2udvr4eb3l4v2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span> are a proactive side, always looking to dominate the ball. They have played 8,085 passes in their opponent&#8217;s half this season, a total only <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-b1fhdugizckw6bu14jiw8i2gkh5bywoz\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/liverpool_f-c\">Liverpool<\/span> and <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-k05kbw0hxxqb6zsipvt0edmubjvqryb6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/manchester_city\">Man City<\/span> have bettered.<\/p>\n<p>The thing is, when you play that open you have to be ruthless in terms of scoring goals to put opponents away. <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-bfw8tru0gkc32er63wfyur6hni0qaj5t\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/liverpool_f-c\">Liverpool<\/span> have scored 61 goals this season and <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-7u3rdb5786ifwx0xj3zowomsl6geogva\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/manchester_city\">Manchester City<\/span> have put 65 away, so <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-rcgmtv8cc3f7ttdvw9kviun9prvnkha8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span>&#8216;s haul of 43 (the same as <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-qv7sm6rc4vj86b72pi7wxlz8v7gbc4cc\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/tottenham_hotspur_f-c\">Spurs<\/span> and only five ahead of <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-9y5e0nxwq1t7topzduy2t2432f98zg8r\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/manchester_united\">Man Utd<\/span>&#8216;s 38) isn&#8217;t as impressive as it first seems.<\/p>\n<p>Tammy Abraham has 13 league goals this season, an impressive total given his age. But, in the last two-and-a-half months he&#8217;s only scored three times, and when Abraham\u00a0doesn&#8217;t score, <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-qqlp6h2tg4oyzgvvfz09wrqc9dap1pd5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span> don&#8217;t really have anyone else that can. After Abraham, the next highest scorers in the league are Mason Mount and <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-qvvts48kwfbhjvkg1v7ecl9x3wz2l3jy\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/christian_pulisic\">Christian Pulisic<\/span> on five apiece.<\/p>\n<p>Abraham&#8217;s importance, therefore, cannot be understated. In the 11 games he has scored across all competitions, <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-2cfk5lb7bbo3rwznu5on8ykjc0too5aa\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span> have won 10. Only against <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-5kbxd7gprudeugalh1c693sb3wujr8ld\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/sheffield_united\">Sheffield United<\/span> where they threw away a two goal lead &#8212; handed to them by Abraham no less &#8212; did they fail to record a victory. When he&#8217;s firing, so are <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-fapdt0na4ykn7x595a43loa8maisibog\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span>, but it cuts the other way as well because the <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-0fvesd7q7ranr4onk1f8zfhbrrbtmq4h\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Blues<\/span> have won just five games this season without Abraham scoring (when he&#8217;s played).<\/p>\n<p>That kind of reliance on a young striker is always tricky because if he goes through a dry(ish) spell, then the entire side will struggle. It is the main one, of course, and <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-qurzvhozb7d0v7m7erwxkgdfowj3qlw5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/frank_lampard\">Lampard<\/span> has even highlighted that in previous interviews. Their inability to create consistent goal pressure with the style of play they adopt &#8211; dominating the midfield &#8211; is a considerable flaw at the moment,\u00a0but equally as troubling, is their goalkeeping.<\/p>\n<p>Against <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-ep62p9q0e6cfj8cbs3somk9jyou2isgj\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/manchester_united\">Manchester United<\/span>, they conceded three shots on target and two of them went in. The final one, right at the death, was a one-v-one that, had Odion Ighalo trained more than a couple days with his team-mates, would probably have been a goal too.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-nlgolcc0njgxwpucpcx3k8g2j1nk9bo9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea&#8217;s<\/span> dominance with the ball means that they have only faced 230 shots this season, only <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-vk77jlgjjemeikd71ci385cr7hdf9m6v\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/manchester_city\">Man City<\/span> have faced fewer. They don&#8217;t let opponents get too many chances at goal. But, then you look at goals conceded, where <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-a8y6lcabk8c3oaa3byx8kg44wewp8b3r\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea&#8217;s<\/span> 36 leaves them 10th. <em>Tenth<\/em>.
