Spurs need a No. 9<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Harry Kane&#8217;s injured. That is certain. Whether or not he&#8217;s going to be out until the middle of summer (per his manager) or the middle of April (per his people), he is out right now and Spurs need to adjust. Except they can&#8217;t adjust. <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-hag01yckgzpzrh73hibdc50eh9wpi6b3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/mauricio_pochettino\">Mauricio Pochettino<\/span> would have been able to adjust, but <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-gd045du1ssmugrpahc01pot4c0nnzm69\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/jose_mourinho\">Jos\u00e9 Mourinho<\/span> is the kind of manager who <em>needs<\/em> a No. 9.<\/p>\n<p>Today he played Lucas Moura up-front and that worked about as well as it sounds. <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-pdyswcnnxdiwtekfm05ajviv924b53mv\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/tottenham_hotspur_f-c\">Spurs<\/span> were aching for someone to play off in attack, with so many of their forays forward being rebuffed by the Watford defenders with an almost insulting ease. Luckily for them, this is January and there&#8217;s two weeks of the transfer window left. <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-8sz51zltqkurqv7g791lt8232oxhrut1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/tottenham_hotspur_f-c\">Spurs<\/span> have plenty of time to find a back-up for<span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-1p0cqhi3q57qgbyllrqzpngbc3vno1ck\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/harry_kane\">\u00a0Kane<\/span>, a big lad to go up-top. <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-gsmicidb5vs2upbqqjqapxp0ckmpnrqs\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/jose_mourinho\">Mourinho<\/span> can&#8217;t function without one.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Mourinho vs. VAR<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-nrm0ojf25qc3yubt90f4m17rxp5gonyg\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/jose_mourinho\">Mourinho<\/span> is always quick with the pithy post-match remarks so one can only imagine what he has planned for VAR after this match. He could dine out on the decisions that went against his side at Vicarage Road for weeks &#8211; months, even!<\/p>\n<p>Obviously the one big problem VAR presents vs, say, goal-line technology is that it is just another person looking at an incident. It&#8217;s just one more human opinion and is vulnerable to all the little foibles that all humans are. As <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-k4jdsil1qe1farw9kh8qroltd20ndcu1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/jose_mourinho\">Mourinho<\/span> said post-match:\u00a0&#8220;the goal-line technology doesn&#8217;t make mistakes like the VAR makes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So today we saw two massive incidents in which VAR roused itself to deliver baffling verdicts that went wholly against <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-g2r35aissnfa0z8whbxir6adxf2uhwwn\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/tottenham_hotspur_f-c\">Spurs<\/span>. First the lack of a red card for Etienne Capoue after his shocking studs up lunge on Japhet Tanganga. Despite the attentions of VAR there wasn&#8217;t even a yellow card given (he picked one up later) and given how early it happened that could have changed the game. Many will focus on the lack of a yellow and how Capoue would or wouldn&#8217;t have picked up a second yellow later &#8211; but that was an absolute <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-ie7yhw3pdrpb1phg14zb6r1hhic5vspf\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/liverpool_f-c\">red<\/span>. You can&#8217;t lunge like that.<\/p>\n<p>Then on the hour mark there was a scuffle between Harry Winks and Abdoulaye Doucour\u00e9 where the Frenchman slapped Winks in the face then pushed Jan Vertonghen, also in the face. Somehow Doucour\u00e9 was only booked for that, leaving Watford with 11 men instead of the nine they should have had. <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-2xslwmmra51n8ev5knhvg6q0thtlono6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/jose_mourinho\">Mourinho<\/span> often whines about nothing, but today he&#8217;s got every right to be fuming with VAR.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">93 &#8211; Watford 0-0 Spurs ended a run of 93 Premier League games without a goalless draw for Tottenham, the second longest run in the competition&#39;s history (Man Utd, 114 games ending May 2002). Gedson shows some promise<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Gedson Fernandes is the first new signing of the Mourinho era and his debut, in a tricky game against Watford where <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-d9ps99rdwqmu89kh9tlxtxraw4wy84zv\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/tottenham_hotspur_f-c\">Spurs<\/span> weren&#8217;t at their best, was quite promising.<\/p>\n<p>Alright, it didn&#8217;t consist of much beyond a couple of touches but the way he made those touches, and the spaces in which he made them, showed him to be an associative player that will only help <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-d7qfa7nm17vacitaafp5gie8ceeah64w\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/tottenham_hotspur_f-c\">Spurs<\/span> to play well in the final third. He appeared in the right space to make little passes, one a backheel, to keep attacks flowing with good momentum. Paulo GazzaNOga<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It can&#8217;t be easy being Paulo Gazzaniga. Despite being an almost prototypical\u00a0<span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-t3dh5j1rmxrvktll132hwfoy3eale76u\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/jose_mourinho\">Mourinho<\/span> goalkeeper (tall, imposing, over 25, originally a talented back-up) the Argentine is yet to truly distinguish himself on the field for <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-idxvqr4rereqlaxtvefc1arwaounmfeq\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/tottenham_hotspur_f-c\">Spurs<\/span>. His form in recent weeks has been particularly poor too; he hasn&#8217;t put Hugo Lloris in the shade. With 20 minutes on the clock Gerard Deulofeu&#8217;s shot was handled by\u00a0Vertonghen and up stepped Watford&#8217;s massive captain Troy Deeney. A goal here would surely have broken <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-bnzlfq2s4kaoxoiu977td3d8k6i7t5xd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/tottenham_hotspur_f-c\">Spurs<\/span> and given a motivated Watford an advantage they could hold. But Deeney was rebuffed by Gazzaniga, diving to his right and thumping the ball well wide.<\/p>\n<p>It was an imposing, dominant save and it won <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-wb91mh5sb2f1pyz6t8kk2ho149f4zxiv\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/tottenham_hotspur_f-c\">Spurs<\/span> a point and a clean sheet &#8211; just their second of the <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-mbipyzvdjfr9187vwr8myn97mmob1w43\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/jose_mourinho\">Mourinho<\/span> era (and the first in nine games). This could mark the start of Gazzaniga truly deposing Lloris as <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-wimyc19rgl1nwahl825d9dmz0kt8zo69\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/tottenham_hotspur_f-c\">Spurs<\/span>&#8216; No. 1.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>5. Pearson&#8217;s resurgence continues<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Watford were six points adrift when Nigel Pearson took over. They were absolutely horrible. Then\u00a0Pearson showed up and showed exactly why he should become the new Sam Allardyce in terms of the go-to manager to save teams from relegation. They lost their first game against <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-wixjw6yiyhizltfd4jlfd9uolbm4d6yb\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/liverpool_f-c\">Liverpool<\/span>, but are unbeaten in the six <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-x8kgq5dzfr3x1pwu90hfpqegmdju8gyd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/premier_league_2\">Premier League<\/span> games since then. They&#8217;ve beaten <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-4cyfks3m3j4vith1t7qnwp20igdrn9hi\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/manchester_united\">Manchester United<\/span> in that time and smashed Aston Villa and Bournemouth too.<\/p>\n<p>They are so impressive and are now two points clear of the relegation zone.
