Last season ended <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-kte77pzq1c955rrgpejfgn9994bbixz8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea&#8217;s<\/span> run of five consecutive Youth Cup wins which started in 2013\/14 and featured many of the club&#8217;s brightest young stars.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"background-color: transparent; display: block; padding: 0; max-width: 700px;\" title=\"Audioboom player\" src=\"https:\/\/embeds.audioboom.com\/posts\/7480368\/embed\/v4?image_option=fullsq\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>But over the years these players have been starved of first-team action as <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-ygcxs4n0sz38sq96ets3yzrt59049nnk\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span> have often preferred to look to the transfer market to bolster their squad; a result of the club&#8217;s high standards and quest for glory &#8211; though not a valid excuse.<\/p>\n<p>With no space for them at <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-6yhhpllosgiuu1hztybfn0hr9qm3t6ni\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span>, young players have often been sent out on various loan spells, another point of criticism for the west London club. Last season, the <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-tn1nqm9fxikjmh053igjck9i6hu4wqsf\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Blues<\/span> had 41 players out on loan at one point, with mostly young stars being sent across Europe. Most saw this as <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-zm4pwohkrwb7hklb5w436a1ez5grf704\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span> trying to add value to young players who they had no plans of using before selling for a profit. But 2019 brought a change.<\/p>\n<p>As punishment for breaching rules on signing young players, <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-cene5sz8k08ansf0ksdraqwh2rnx1i1t\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span> were handed a two-window transfer ban by Fifa in February 2019. The initial ruling said that t<span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-b09oexx8hq9c4sdv5eentcr1syemrscm\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">he Blues<\/span> would not be able to sign anyone until June 2020, effectively leaving them to work with the players they had at their disposal. For a squad that needed restructuring and with Eden Hazard on his way to Real Madrid, things looked bleak for <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-9na3sqjawmwd70dsiqzs0dnvp1kv2xmz\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span>. But it has turned out to be a blessing in disguise.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Promoting from within<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Before <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-4pp1tdkuok859rh48ddmu4kgoxymbt7z\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span> looked at rebuilding their squad, they needed to sort out the man who would pick the team. With Maurizio Sarri opting to join Juventus after just one season at <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-xhughnimophoa7q11qx1tg6ubzczrtyo\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span>, the <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-mjci0l7x5jlgc3ftbtevtcg4zidhecp9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Blues<\/span> appointed their all-time record goalscorer <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-qqgb6tkuzwhwi7xdmgxf4nttefj40mgk\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/frank_lampard\">Frank Lampard<\/span> as his replacement.<\/p>\n<p>Lampard, who spent 13 years as a player at <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-40b7zcc6lnkv66sjuwp8tb8lu6p2wid4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span>, brought Jody Morris and Joe Edwards in as his assistants and that was an early sign of things to come. But there were also fears as the Englishman took the supposedly cursed no.9 shirt on top of a previous struggle in the <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-l6cw4goi937yfp2s07boi0dgjt4xo085\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/premier_league_2\">Premier League<\/span> with Swansea City. These fears weren&#8217;t helped by his frustrating afternoon in front of goal during a 4-0 defeat to <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-cqzlzqx72i585fjzsxufux00mme9bxw3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/manchester_united\">Manchester United<\/span> but the promise was there for the optimists to see, and Lampard clearly saw it.<\/p>\n<p>Since that day, Abraham has scored 15 goals for <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-1ena9t32zrni2v05sdiic1dycxhu7l4v\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span> across all competitions including 13 in the <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-hj7w6yt5m9kwteccyg8iki0e9mz1szqk\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/premier_league_2\">Premier League<\/span> with only Jamie Vardy (17), <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-f3cbx464dln3909qctquacxr23smg5wf\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/pierre-emerick_aubameyang\">Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang<\/span>, <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-66ddluorisbo8hk8ez4nivkuk1m0xoap\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/marcus_rashford\">Marcus Rashford<\/span> and Danny Ings (all 14) managing more.<\/p>\n<p>As the season has gone on, Abraham, Mount and Christensen have been joined by Fikayo Tomori, Reece James, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Tariq Lamptey and Billy Gilmour in being handed <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-6n5jgf6evsqvydvl3du7ebl6z2bxtpdf\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/premier_league_2\">Premier League<\/span> appearances &#8211; and only the latter has been a brief cameo. Previously these new deals would often be followed by said players being sent out on loan, ensuring <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-jcgr65d7mogkgw84uwy3dkgdmo5vk774\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span> do not lose out on any potential investments as contracts run down.
