Hope was restored to the blue half of Merseyside.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"background-color: transparent; display: block; padding: 0; max-width: 700px;\" title=\"Audioboom player\" src=\"https:\/\/embeds.audioboom.com\/posts\/7442672\/embed\/v4?image_option=full\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>However, despite another summer of intensive spending to try and finally push Everton back into English football&#8217;s elite, the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-20c7c06e-915c-f3d4-0f9b-c1ca421fa97c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/everton_fc\">Toffees<\/span> have floundered and won just four of their 15 <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f36faf1b-c0cd-a4f1-a4f8-3cbe14374df7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/premier_league_2\">Premier League<\/span> games so far this season, leaving them 18th in the table with just 14 points.<\/p>\n<p>So, just how did we get here and what were the critical mistakes Silva made that led to his sacking?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. Defending set-pieces<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>No <span id=\"urn:enhancement-09b436cf-6558-b786-68b7-62a2d2e9d10b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/premier_league_2\">Premier League<\/span> team conceded more goals from set-pieces than <span id=\"urn:enhancement-371ef0ce-146d-bc77-aa2a-d4ef377d6e04\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/everton_fc\">Everton&#8217;s<\/span> 16 last season and that trend hasn&#8217;t changed in this campaign either, with only Aston Villa (8) conceding more than their seven. Whether they mark zonally or man-to-man, the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b4c045f6-88a4-b4fd-f42d-841e8d39ef43\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/everton_fc\">Toffees<\/span> have been unable to deal with dead-ball deliveries.<\/p>\n<p>During the early stages of Silva&#8217;s reign, it was the front post getting hammered with crosses, with no <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4828c2c0-0551-8738-5f22-7bb0369da5db\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/everton_fc\">Everton<\/span> defender taking charge or reacting to crosses into the box. Balls were getting flicked on at pace, with attackers wreaking havoc on Jordan Pickford&#8217;s goal in the confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Toward the end of 2018\/19, it appeared Silva had fixed the issue but this season, a new set-piece demon has reared its ugly head, with teams now hammering crosses into <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9ce38ca2-ffb2-1c50-6380-d15e320b0e8d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/everton_fc\">Everton&#8217;s<\/span> back post, which has been left inexplicably unmanned.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Whilst the same seems to provide plenty of front end protection, there is an area of vulnerability towards the back post, as highlighted in green. <\/p>\n<p>That specific area of the box is where opposing sides have been targeting. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/E1Gs8zr4WX\">pic.twitter.com\/E1Gs8zr4WX<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; David Hughes (@DAHughes_) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DAHughes_\/status\/1181452366874382336?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 8, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>To blame the zonal marking system would be naive.\u00a0At the end of the day, goals are scored from corners and free-kicks throughout the season and man-marking only gives you culpability for each individual error, but knowing who to blame doesn&#8217;t stop the goal being scored in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Silva&#8217;s version of zonal marking has been an unmitigated disaster, offering the opposition a clear weakness to target and meaning Evertonians could never quite sit comfortably in their seats as their team lined up to repel attacks.<\/p>\n<p>The sheer level of goals conceded from this situation has undoubtedly attributed to Silva&#8217;s downfall.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Centre-backs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Last season, Silva had the luxury of choosing from Michael Keane, Kurt Zouma, Yerry Mina and veteran Phil Jagielka to form a centre-back pairing, meaning he was even able to loan Mason Holgate to West Brom. This season, those options have been greatly reduced, with Zouma heading back to <span id=\"urn:enhancement-31b907a6-ebba-d8b1-dff7-adfa3c2fb2b3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span> and Jagielka moving to <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a2e44e7e-951d-be3d-b4d6-f0d719f4a59c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/sheffield_united\">Sheffield United<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>While Keane and Mina have, at times, had some strong performances in an <span id=\"urn:enhancement-92f547ab-562f-32df-dd71-1ddec6c25cd8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/everton_fc\">Everton<\/span> shirt, neither has consistently convinced and both a prone to errors and lapses in concentration. Take a look at their horrific tracking of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a35cb07e-2425-436e-3358-69f364d61bb3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/liverpool_f-c\">Liverpool<\/span> runners during that Merseyside derby humbling for exhibit A. Holgate, meanwhile, is 23 years old now and no longer that fresh-faced youngster showing promise he was under Ronald Koeman.<\/p>\n<p>Three centre-backs are clearly not enough to comfortably stay out of the relegation zone, let alone challenge for European places. Three sub-standard centre-backs are even worse.<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;It&#8217;s not the best scenario to start just with three defenders but it is what it is and we have to manage the situation in the best way,&#8221; Silva <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailypost.co.uk\/sport\/uk-sport-news\/marco-silva-happy-everton-fc-16730905\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> of his centre-back conundrum back in the summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To blame Silva for not securing the permanent signing of Zouma would be unfair. <span id=\"urn:enhancement-03285420-04d7-d1f8-2c73-33724e09a4c6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/chelsea_f-c\">Chelsea<\/span> are currently under a transfer embargo and hardly in a position to be selling players, while there are more levels of power above the manager at <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8bf139f4-95d5-de42-34aa-01c9f4a3b654\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/everton_fc\">Everton<\/span> when it comes to transfers.<\/p>\n<p>That said, to put all the eggs in one basket by banking on Zouma was incredibly ill-advised and something must surely have worried about heading toward the summer transfer deadline.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. Predictability<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Everton have started their last two games in a 3-4-3\/5-4-1 hybrid as Silva sought to restore some defensive solidity to his side but make no mistake, this sort of tactical variety has not been a feature of his time in charge.<\/p>\n<p>The <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9eb5a6b9-d0c2-edb4-7d02-bc408f3dd1b0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/everton_fc\">Toffees<\/span> had lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation for the vast majority of their <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d373c74f-244e-1c38-2595-3091640a2e60\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/premier_league_2\">Premier League<\/span> games so far this season and predictability has been one of the biggest criticisms levelled at Silva.<\/p>\n<p>All too often, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d0a7ef7d-c3d0-b0a1-599c-71d6dc94f958\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/everton_fc\">Everton<\/span> have had the same set-up, played at the same tempo and followed the same passing rhythms. Against some of the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8d721d99-9313-92fc-4924-59c41dc4043b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/premier_league_2\">Premier League<\/span>&#8216;s elite, the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e1ed353c-1ea7-0b35-10aa-02057415cbce\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/everton_fc\">Toffees<\/span> have actually flourished in the space they&#8217;ve been allowed, hence the impressive performances at the end of last season and the way they recently took the game to <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c5a8f625-c341-1f94-dc18-d54fa6bebe86\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/leicester_city\">Leicester<\/span> in that heartbreaking 2-1 defeat.<\/p>\n<p>But when coming up against some of the supposed &#8220;lesser&#8221; sides in the top flight, Silva&#8217;s side have really struggled. <span id=\"urn:enhancement-72b60d9e-e168-51da-7f2a-1c723070752f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/everton_fc\">Everton&#8217;s<\/span> lacklustre approach of slow build-up play and endless crossing. The <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2f0e64b5-81d0-5f6b-6dce-3115b9bc2234\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/everton_fc\">Toffees<\/span> rank third in the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-14c10344-c546-1129-63ba-4c1248a1cd24\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/premier_league_2\">Premier League<\/span> for attempted open play crosses (245) this season, but 13th in terms of accuracy (17.55%). The result? <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e9d363ec-b9c9-3d9d-ead3-61e5d2b2e1fb\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/everton_fc\">Everton<\/span> are really easy to defend against. Sit in a low block and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e1bab42d-6f8b-de68-3477-89d91e87248e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/everton_fc\">Everton<\/span> can&#8217;t play through you, defend your own box competently and the ideas start to run out.<\/p>\n<p>The best managers have variety, hence why <span id=\"urn:enhancement-eabe851b-1915-71f9-e3d5-3c7ccea3d83b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/jurgen_klopp\">Jurgen Klopp<\/span>&#8216;s <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c6c0e3a8-dece-3bf2-d84a-1f20f90b52c9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/liverpool_f-c\">Liverpool<\/span> and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8a54ef85-758d-1d6f-eb67-02a2f6f6ed2f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/pep_guardiola\">Pep Guardiola<\/span>&#8216;s <span id=\"urn:enhancement-46bc5392-657a-f4ac-2f43-d8383fa43c28\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/pep_guardiola\">Manchester City<\/span> rank first and second respectively for attempted open play crosses despite being more renowned for their, say, their lightning counter-attacks or precision passing.<\/p>\n<p>Silva has failed miserably in this regard.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. Moise Kean<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Everton&#8217;s long-standing issue of replacing Romelu Lukaku has been well documented and to be honest, it&#8217;s become rather boring. Not because it isn&#8217;t true, but because the club still haven&#8217;t been able to find a successful solution, two years later.<\/p>\n<p>But wait a minute, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-72b1f866-52bf-9d8c-c49b-e7e6294f44b3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/everton_fc\">Everton<\/span> signed Italian starlet Moise Kean in the summer, right? His two recent cameo appearances against <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b619716d-95b4-215b-7956-e8615bb60670\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/leicester_city\">Leicester<\/span> and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-af790972-9511-73f7-fa83-198d80e2b44c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01348\/entity\/liverpool_f-c\">Liverpool<\/span> very nearly yielded goals but his chance in the Merseyside derby especially stunk of a player lacking in match fitness and confidence.<\/p>\n<p>Few are privy to what goes on behind closed doors during training and, yes, Kean was punished for being late to a team meeting.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, this is a 19-year-old forward who is desperate for a chance in his natural position, centre-forward. Yet, Silva insisted on fielding him as a winger and suggested that was, in fact, the position in which was most effective, a bizarre comment given 18 of his 19 career appearances as a left-winger to date have come during his time in the Juventus youth team.<\/p>\n<p>Is Silva totally to blame for Kean flopping so far? No. The teenager still has a lot to learn. But did the manager give him the best chance of success and hitting the ground running?
