In fact, they currently have three goalscorers level on two strikes each. Salah Assad was the first to reach the number, scoring both of his goals in 1982 as Algeria were knocked out in the group stage via the Disgrace of Gijon. Assad had scored both of his goals in the 3-2 win over Chile, but it wasn’t enough to avoid disappoinment.

Abdelmoumene Djabou and Islam Slimani both scored twice at the World Cup in 2014, as Algeria made the knockout stages for the first time. They both scored in Algeria’s 4-2 win over South Korea in the second group stage match, while Slimani got his second in the draw with Russia. The Albiceleste legend has scored 13 goals in total across his five tournaments, and may have the overall World Cup record in his sights this summer. Messi had to wait to really make his mark at the World Cup netting just one goal in 2006 (against Serbia and Montenegro) and failing to score in 2010 at all. He netted four in 2010 but all came in the group stage, with one apiece against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iran, and two in the win over Nigeria.

Messi only scored one more in 2018, again against Nigeria. But he was a man determined in 2022. Messi scored seven goals at the tournament and only failed to find the net once, as he finally led Argentina to World Cup glory — overtaking Gabriel Batistuta as their all-time top World Cup goalscorer along the way.

Australia

Goalscorer: Tim Cahill

Goals: 5

It will be no surprise to see Tim Cahill top of Australia‘s World Cup goalscoring charts. He’s their all-time top goalscorer and the only man to score in three World Cups for the Socceroos. Cahill scored twice in 2006 to help Australia reach the last-16 for the first time, with both goals coming in their opening game against Japan — which saw the Socceroos come from a goal down to win 3-1. Coincidentally, that was also Australia’s biggest-ever World Cup win. This will be their eighth tournament appearance overall, but they haven’t really had a standout goalscorer since Erich Probst. Probst scored all six of his World Cup goals at the 1954 tournament as Austria made it to the semi-finals. Four of those goals came in the group stage, with Austria finishing second, and Probst scored another two in the knockout stages. But some may be shocked to learn that he doesn’t hold the record on his own. Marc Wilmots was the first to reach five goals at World Cups for Belgium, but he failed to find the net in his first two tournaments. He eventually broke his duck in Belgium’s second group game in 1998, scoring both goals in a 2-2 draw with Morocco. Four years later, Wilmots added three more to his tally, overtaking Jan Ceulemans with a goal in each group stage match.

Lukaku came along in 2014 but only scored once in Brazil, what proved to be the winner in the last-16 against the United States. Lukaku scored four goals in Russia in 2018, all of which came in Belgium’s first two group stage matches agaisnt Panama and Tunisia. Vedad Ibisevic will go down in history as the first player to score for Bosnia-Herzegovina at a World Cup, netting in a 2-1 defeat to Argentina in their opening group game in 2014. They then blanked vs Nigeria in their second match, ending their campaign. But Bosnia-Herzegovina finished on a high, with Edin Dzeko, Miralem Pjanic and Avdija Vrsajevic all scoring in a 3-1 win over Iran in their final match. Dzeko is the only player of those four still active, so the record could be his outright this summer — or someone else could overtake them all.

Brazil

Goalscorer: Ronaldo

Goals: 15

For a while, Ronaldo was the top-scoring player in World Cups full stop. Ronaldo had scored against Netherlands in the semi-finals helping to take the game to penalties.

Ronaldo then scored in six of Brazil’s seven games at the 2002 World Cup, only failing to find the net in the quarter-final win over England. Ronaldo took the record outright in 2006 with a goal against Japan in the group stage (again bagging a brace). But Kylian Mbappe is now only one goal behind him, and will be expected to overtake Fontaine this summer.

Germany

Goalscorer: Miroslav Klose

Goals: 16

It’s shouldn’t be a surprise to see Miroslav Klose top of Germany‘s World Cup charts. After all, he’s scored more World Cup goals than any other player full stop. Klose’s 16 goals came in 24 matches across four tournaments, starting with five in 2002. Gyan was part of Ghana’s first World Cup squad and will forever hold a place in their history, scoring their first ever goal at the tournament. He scored three more goals in 2010 as Ghana made the quarter-finals, including the winner against the United States in the last-16. But Gyan famously missed a chance for a fourth goal, missing his last-minute penalty to win the quarter-finals against Uruguay. But the goals have been shared out, rather than having one man run away with things. Their record is currently held by three players. Ahn Jung-hwan was the first to break the record, scoring his three goals across three tournaments. The first came in 2002, with Ahn scoring an equaliser in the 1-1 draw with the United States. South Korea made it to the semi-finals of the tournament they co-hosted, and Ahn helped them get there with a golden goal winner against Italy in the last-16. He scored his third and final World Cup goal in a 2-1 win over Togo in 2006.

Park Ji-sung had also featured at the 2002 World Cup and he helped South Korea seal top spot in their group with a winner in the final match against Portugal. Park had to wait until 2006 for his next World Cup goal, equalising late on in the group stage draw with France. A third goal came four years later, wrapping up a 2-0 group stage win over Greece. Son Heung-min has been the modern hero, and his World Cup goalscoring record started in 2014. But his first goal came in a 4-2 defeat to Algeria as South Korea were knocked out in the group stages. He then scored twice at the 2018 World Cup, a late consolation against Mexico before rounding off a late 2-0 win over Germany.

Midnite Offer: Bet £10, get £30 in free bets

How to claim:

Open an account at Midnite using this link.

Deposit £10 or more

Place your first bet of £10 or more (minimum odds of 1/1)

Receive £30 in free bets, valid for 7 days on selected betse only.

18+ New customers only. Four years later, Villa was instrumental in Spain winning the World Cup for the first time.

Villa scored in four of Spain’s seven games, including three match winners.
