And that saw them knocked out of the tournament in the group stage (courtesy of the Disgrace of Gijon). They had to wait until the 2014 World Cup to win again, and it was their biggest victory so far. Goals from Islam Slimani, Rafik Halliche and Abdelmoumene Djabou saw Algeria race to a 3-0 lead over South Korea before half-time. South Korea did get a goal back before Yacine Brahimi made it 4-1. There was another consolation for South Korea, but a two-goal victory had been secured.

Argentina

Argentina 6-0 Peru (21/06/1978)

Argentina 6-0 Serbia and Montenegro (16/06/2006)

Argentina have won World Cup games 6-0, with differing tournament results. The first came against Peru in their final game of the second group stage in 1978. That World Cup was hosted by Argentina, and this game was filled with controversy. Before the Disgrace of Gijon, Argentina’s game against Peru took place after Brazil faced Poland. So Argentina knew they needed to win by at least four goals to top the group. There has been a lot of talk of outside interference to try to steer Argentina to victory, though nothing has ever been proven. Argentina went on to win the tournament.

The 6-0 win over Serbia and Montenegro in the 2006 World Cup group stage was a lot more straightforward. Argentina had too much for their opponents and were 3-0 up at half-time thanks to goals from Maxi Rodriguez (two) and Esteban Cambiasso. Hernan Crespo, Carlos Tevez and one Lionel Messi wrapped up the scoring in the second half, the latter getting his first ever World Cup goal.

Australia

Australia 3-1 Japan (12/06/2006)

Australia‘s biggest-ever World Cup win was actually their first at the tournament. The Socceroos went winless in their tournament debut in 1974, and didn’t return until 2006. Things looked to be off to a bad start there, too, as Australia trailed Japan going into the final 10 minutes. But Tim Cahill came off the bench to score twice and John Aloisi rounded off the scoring to cap off a historic win.

Austria

Austria 5-0 Czechoslovakia (19/06/1954)

Austria were an exciting team at the 1954 World Cup, with 29 goals scored in their five games. And it remains their joint-biggest. The Red Devils beat El Salvador 3-0 at the 1970 World Cup, though it was their only victory at that tournament which ended in group stage exit.

Belgium fared much better in 2018, making it all the way to the semi-finals. And their run involved two victories by three-goal margins, both coming in the group stage. Belgium opened their tournament with a 3-0 win over Panama, thanks to second-half goals from Dries Mertens and Romelu Lukaku (two). They then beat Tunisia 5-2 in their next game. Lukaku bagged another brace, with Eden Hazard also scoring two and Michy Batshuayi late on. A late consolation from Wahbi Khazri stopped this from being Belgium’s standalone biggest World Cup win.

Bosnia-Herzegovina

Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-1 Iran (25/06/2014)

Bosnia-Herzegovina have only won one game at a World Cup. They were up against Iran, who still had a chance of making the knockout stages, but you wouldn’t have known that from the match. Edin Dzeko gave Bosnia-Herzegovina a 1-0 lead, and Miralem Pjanic made it two just before the hour mark. Reza Ghoochannejhad scored with eight minutes to go, to threaten Bosnia-Herzegovina’s position but Avdija Vrsajevic restore the two-goal advantage moments later.

Brazil

Brazil 7-1 Sweden (08/07/1950)

Many Brazil fans will remember a certain 7-1 game at the World Cup in Brazil. Brazil were high scorers at the 1950 World Cup, though they finished as runners-up in the final round — losing the de facto final to Uruguay. Brazil won the first game of their final round, beating Sweden 7-1. Ademir scored four in the win, helping him to claim the Golden Boot. Pablo Armero, Teofilo Gutierrez and James Rodriguez were the scorers, with the latter having his breakthrough tournament. After beating Ivory Coast in their second game, Colombia secured a perfect group stage with a 4-1 win over Japan. Juan Cuadrado opened the scoring from the penalty spot but Shinji Okazaki equalised just before half-time. Jackson Martinez restored the lead shortly after the break and then got a second. Again, Rodriguez rounded off the scoring.

Four years later Colombia beat Poland 3-0 in their second group stage match, en route to a last-16 exit. It was their final group game of the 1998 World Cup, when Morocco had an outside chance of reaching the knockout stages. They needed to beat Scotland and hope Brazil avoid defeat against Norway — which might have been expected. Salaheddine Bassir scored twice for Morocco either side of Abdeljalil Hadda’s strike to secure the 3-0 win. Celso Ayala opened the scoring inside the opening minute, but Wilson Oruma equalised not too long after. Second-half goals from Peque Benitez and Jose Cardozo sealed Paraguay’s victory.
