His journey began at boyhood club Køge, where Heerenveen’s scouts were convinced of his qualities and, following his arrival at the Dutch outfit, Tomasson registered 37 goals in 78 league matches. Watching from afar was Premier League entertainers Newcastle United but his time at St James’ Park was at best forgettable. Feyenoord would soon rehabilitate him, leading to a transfer to Milan where he collected a Champions League winners’ medal. Dost would go on to bag 52 goals across 73 matches with 45 of those strikes coming in the league. His final season (2011/12) saw him pick up the Eredivisie Golden Shoe and that attracted Wolfsburg who had the Dutch marksman for five seasons. A big reason was his consistent performances in a Heerenveen jersey. The attacking midfielder ultimately made 99 league appearances, grabbing 20 goals in the process. Đuričić was immediately linked with regional giants Ajax but opted for a Portuguese adventure with Benfica where his career stalled. As Águias loaned him out three times, including to Southampton, before greenlighting a sale to Sampdoria (where he plays today) and from there, he joined Sassuolo where he felt right at home with the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons being Đuričić’s most productive since his Heerenveen days.

6. Alfred Finnbogason also had the privilege of working under Marco van Basten, whom he credits for his personal development. The 61-time capped Icelandic star enjoyed two Eredivisie seasons where he scored 53 goals across 65 matches. Understandably, this led to a number of clubs vying for Finnbogason’s signature though ultimately he fancied La Liga by putting pen to paper on a Real Sociedad contract. But that dream was unfulfilled as Los Txuri-Urdin loaned him out twice. One destination was Augsburg, where he’s since left for Lyngby.

7. His time was short and that’s because Ajax also realised his frightening potential. After registering 33 goals across 46 games, he truly came alive in Amsterdam — 76 strikes in 92 league appearances — which alerted Real Madrid’s attention. Unfortunately for him, Bernd Schuster, the manager that wanted him, was relieved of his duties as soon as Huntelaar arrived. That being said, he still played 20 times in La Liga and bagged eight goals. Milan later adopted him and Huntelaar produced similar numbers before calling Schalke home. The Dutch marksman really took off there, subsequently earning a Bundesliga top goalscorer prize. Huntelaar, after scoring 126 times from 240 matches played, returned to Ajax where he finally got his hands on the Eredivisie shield.

8. His final campaign saw him come close to breaking Ruud Gullit’s record for most assists in a single Dutch top-division season. PSV hoped to profit from his individual brilliance and to an extent they did. Narsingh managed 26 goals and 31 assists in 159 appearances before Swansea City made him a Premier League footballer. Like many who took this step before him Narsingh floundered before re-settling at Feyenoord, where he’d struggle to recapture those former numbers, he would then leave De Kuip for Sydney FC before signing for Polish club Miedź Legnica.

9. Before he lit up Old Trafford, where he bagged 95 goals across 150 league matches, Ruud van Nistelrooy was terrorising Eredivisie defenders. The first real signs of his incredible striking brilliance on a consistent basis came at Heerenveen, where he found the net 13 times in 31 outings. PSV, who had the likes of Ronaldo and Romario on their books, transferred him to Eindhoven and no backline was safe. Van Nistelrooy entered relentless mode, as well as developing a feared partnership with Belgian forward Luc Nilis, and when Sir Alex Ferguson finally got his man, the native of Oss had celebrated 62 league goals having played 67 matches. Following his departure from England, he’d gain a new lease of life at Real Madrid — 64 goals in 96 matches — before winding down his career at Hamburg and Malaga.

10. There was a common belief that Ødegaard should have opted for Eredivisie football, with Ajax heavily interested, over the glitz of Madrid as it would aid his development more greatly. With no chance of turning back time, Ødegaard hit the ground running and soon became a valuable member of the roster. He featured across 38 league outings, scoring three goals and creating four more, but that wasn’t the end of his Dutch stay as Vitesse would also gain him on loan. After them, it was Real Sociedad’s turn before Arsenal briefly enjoyed his services. He went back to Madrid but his services were no longer required. Now in London, with the Gunners, Ødegaard has started to really fulfil his potential.

11. Manchester City were hoping for more than they got but Samaras never really delivered his end of the bargain before being moved on to Celtic, where he enjoyed a rejuvenation. Samaras featured across 156 league matches for the Glasgow giants and returned 53 goals. A return to England with West Brom never got going and the final years of his professional career were spent at four clubs on three different continents.

12. He’d soon outgrow his boyhood club, after scoring 13 goals and creating 11 more in 46 appearances, by joining FC Twente where Ziyech became an even better player. Following an embarrassing Champions League qualifier exit, Ajax — in an attempt to appease supporters — acquired his signature. It proved to be among Marc Overmars’ most astute signings as Ziyech was directly involved in 130 goals (with him scoring 49 of those) in 165 appearances. Now at Chelsea, the Moroccan international has struggled to hold down a regular starting berth and it remains to be seen whether he’s part of their long-term plans.

Read more:

Latest football news

Football betting tips

Best betting sites

Best free bet offers

Football accumulator tips

There’s something fascinating about Heerenveen, a club that constantly reinvents themselves whenever it seems they are dead certainties to struggle.
