“I’d 8-2 to be an Arsenal fan” is a phrase forever imprinted in the annals of football lore.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manchester United and Arsenal share arguably the greatest non-derby rivalry in Premier League history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This head-to-head matchup is always filled with layers. And one layer stands above all: Man Utd’s 8-2 drubbing of Arsenal in 2011. A result so wild it has its own Wikipedia page<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arsene Wenger took the Gunners to Old Trafford for an encounter with the Red Devils. And they returned to north London battered, bloodied and humiliated by Sir Alex Ferguson\u2019s title winners. It completed one of the worst months in Arsenal’s history. The Gunners took one point from their opening two league games and sold Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri without adequately replacing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was a seriously ridiculous game. Wenger had been forced to send out a makeshift side — but, even in hindsight, it doesn’t look that bad. However, that self-destruct button certainly does look appealing when you’re penned in, down to 10 men and thoroughly on the back foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Danny Welbeck opened the scoring for Man Utd midway through the first half, with Ashley Young doubling the lead shortly after. Wayne Rooney made it 3-0, but Robin van Persie looked to have given Arsenal hope with a goal just before half time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the 70th minute, though, Man Utd were 6-1 up. Rooney scored his second, with goals added by Nani and Park Ji-Sung. Van Persie netted again to make it 6-2, but Carl Jenkinson was sent off shortly after. Rooney completed his hat-trick and Young got a second to compile Arsenal’s misery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
