{"id":1140243,"date":"2021-06-16T22:00:49","date_gmt":"2021-06-16T21:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/?p=1140243"},"modified":"2021-06-16T22:24:43","modified_gmt":"2021-06-16T21:24:43","slug":"where-are-they-now-iceland-england-conquerors-euro-2016","status":"publish","type":"cult-corner","link":"https:\/\/www.squawka.com\/en\/cult-corner\/where-are-they-now-iceland-england-conquerors-euro-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"What became of the Iceland team behind one of England&#8217;s biggest footballing humiliations?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In a competition that became synonymous with unimaginative football and defensive tactics, Iceland provided Euro 2016 with its biggest feel-good story, defying all the odds to reach the quarter-finals.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With a population of just 323,000, Iceland was by far the smallest country ever to qualify for European football&#8217;s flagship international tournament and their plucky underdog tag meant that virtually every football fan adopted them as their second-favourite team.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the obvious &#8216;David vs. Goliath&#8217; narrative that was played out before every one of their fixtures, there was far more to Iceland, both on and off the pitch, that captured the imagination of football fans across the continent.<\/p>\n<p>There was captain Aron Gunnarsson&#8217;s Rory Delap-esque long throws that sparked panic in opposition penalty areas, for instance, Eidur Gudjohnsen&#8217;s final hurrah at the highest level and, of course, <em>that\u00a0<\/em>terrifying Nordic clap that united the players and supporters as one.<\/p>\n<p>Little was expected of Iceland pre-tournament, however, they confounded low expectations placed on them by finishing second in their group to set up a meeting with England in the knockout stages.<\/p>\n<p>That was where Iceland&#8217;s Euro 2016 fairy tale was supposed to end but instead, they caused yet another shock as goals from Ragnar Sigurdsson and Kolbein Sigthorrson cancelled out a Wayne Rooney penalty to hand them a priceless 2-1 victory.<\/p>\n<p>As is often the case when an international minnow causes a big splash at a major tournament, a number of Iceland&#8217;s players earned transfers elsewhere after their summer heroics. He couldn&#8217;t quite restore his place in Slavi\u0161a Jokanovi\u0107&#8217;s\u00a0starting XI and was sold to Rostov in January 2018.
