Nuno Espirito Santo returns to his old stamping ground for the second time in as many months as Wolves host Tottenham in the EFL Cup third round on Wednesday at 7.45pm (UK time).

The Portuguese tactician will be eyeing up a return to winning ways following the 3-0 drubbing he endured against Chelsea at the weekend, and Wolves likewise will be looking to bounce back following their own capitulation against west London opposition, with Brentford claiming a 2-0 victory on Saturday.

Wolves vs Tottenham build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

It’s been a concerning start to life post-Espirito Santo at Molineux, with successor Bruno Lage overseeing just the single win (2-0 vs Watford) across five Premier League outings, with the former Benfica boss already suffering defeat to Spurs on home soil. The West Midlands club endured a 1-0 reversal at the hands of their capital counterparts last month, but a 4-0 win over Nottingham Forest in the second round has given them impetus in this competition already.

Spurs have entered the third round owing to their involvement in the Europa Conference League and Espirito Santo will undoubtably be eyeing up a cup run to finally end the club’s trophy draught. However, he enters this match slightly deflated following a 2-2 draw with Rennes on Thursday night and back-to-back 3-0 defeats in the Premier League. Having already slain Wolves once this season, Spurs will travel slightly north knowing they have the capabilities of progressing.

  • Wolves (vs Brentford): Sa; Kilman, Coady, Saiss; Semedo, Neves, Moutinho, Marcal; Trincao, Traore, Jimenez.
  • Tottenham (vs Chelsea): Lloris; Emerson, Romero, Dier, Reguilon; Ndombele, Hojbjerg, Alli; Lo Celso, Son, Kane.

Pedro Neto and Jonathan Otto remain long-term absentees for Wolves, while Spurs could welcome back Lucas Moura, Steven Bergwijn and Ryan Sessegnon.

Espirito Santo: Kane’s scoring drought not Tottenham’s only problem

Following a summer of major speculation and tangible links to striker-famished Manchester City, Kane ultimately stuck around in north London, but thus far he has been unable to open his Premier League account for the campaign and there are now growing concerns from the dugout as a result.

However, Espirito Santo was quick to emphasis after the Chelsea defeat that Kane’s early scoring issues are not the sole reason for Spurs slight dip in form following a blistering start to the campaign.

“There are so many problems we have to solve,” he said.

“The momentum we had before the international break has gone, there is an absence of players, we have to improve our levels of performance, we concede too many goals from set-pieces and we cannot sustain our play for long periods of the game.

“The momentum we had before the international break has gone, there is an absence of players, we have to improve our levels of performance, we concede too many goals from set-pieces and we cannot sustain our play for long periods of the game.

“Harry [Kane] is part of the team, like all of us. It’s all about the partnerships and the way we do things – everyone has to be involved.”
