Wolfsburg vs Borussia Dortmund build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Wolfsburg had an excellent start to the season, winning their opening four Bundesliga matches but things took a turn for the worse and by October they had a new manager with Florian Kohfeldt replacing Mark van Bommel. Kohfeldt has had a decent start to life in Wolfsburg, winning his opening three matches including victory over Bayer Leverkusen and the club’s first Champions League win of the season against Red Bull Salzburg. However, after drawing with 17th-placed Arminia Bielefeld at the weekend, Wolfsburg were beaten 2-0 by Sevilla in midweek which leaves them needing a win in their final group stage game to stay in the Champions League.

Borussia Dortmund also tasted defeat in the Champions League in midweek, a 3-1 humbling at the hands of Sporting CP which has seen them relegated to the Europa League knockout play-off round for next year. However, their European form has been in contrast to their Bundesliga record, with Dortmund winning nine of their opening 12 matches, losing three. As a result, Rose’s side go into this game knowing victory would move them above Bayern Munich albeit just for a few hours unless Bielefeld shock the German champions. Nonetheless it would be a big statement for Dortmund and their aspirations in a season where Bundesliga managerial changes haven’t exactly worked out for most teams.

  • Wolfsburg (vs Sevilla): Pervan; Baku, Lacroix, Brooks, Roussillon; Arnold, Guilavogui, Vranckx; Gerhardt, Weghorst, Nmecha.
  • Borussia Dortmund (vs Sporting CP): Kobel; Meunier, Akanji, Pongracic, Schulz; Bellingham*, Witsel; Brandt, Reinier, Reus; Malen.

Wolfsburg remain without Bartosz Bialek, Koen Casteels, Xaver Schlager and William. Rose has confirmed Haaland will travel to Wolfsburg but any involvement would be minimal. Jude Bellingham does, however, miss out after picking up a knock and joins Gio Reyna, Marcel Schmelzer, Thorgan Hazard and Raphael Guerreiro on the sidelines. Roman Burki is still a doubt.

A one-sided fixture

Sometimes Wolfsburg fans must wonder why their team even bothers turning up against Dortmund given how one-sided this fixture has been in recent times. Since winning 3-1 in the 2015 DFB-Pokal final, Wolfsburg have gone 12 games without victory against Dortmund, losing 11 and managing just one draw (in January 2018).

With all 12 games coming in the Bundesliga, Wolfsburg haven’t had a longer winless run against an opponent in their top-flight history (having also won the meeting before the DFB-Pokal final). Dortmund have won their last six Bundesliga trips to Wolfsburg, their best record on the road against a single opponent.

But that’s not the worst of it. Dortmund have kept a clean sheet in each of their past NINE Bundesliga games against Wolfsburg, scoring 18 goals in eight wins and one goalless draw. That’s nine matches Wolfsburg fans have had to watch their team struggle against the Dortmund defence, but even the two games before that in which they did so, the goals came in 5-1 defeats.

Can the curse end this weekend?
