Wolfsburg will be hoping they can get their season back on track when they host Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday at 2:30pm (UK time).
Mark van Bommel’s side opened the campaign with four straight wins in the Bundesliga but have now gone for matches without victory, including three straight defeats. That poor form has carried over to the Champions League too, with Wolfsburg yet to win in their opening three group stage matches. Freiburg, on the other hand, are the last remaining unbeaten side in the Bundesliga and sit pretty in fourth with four wins and four draws in eight games.

Can Wolfsburg breach Freiburg’s league-best defence?
This weekend’s game pits the Bundesliga’s best defence against one of its weakest attacks as Freiburg look to pile onto Wolfsburg’s misery.
As well as remaining unbeaten in eight matches so far this season, Freiburg have also conceded six goals, fewer than any other team in the Bundesliga. They have also kept two clean sheets against from home in the Bundesliga, the joint-most in the league alongside Augsburg and Hoffenheim.
Freiburg’s defensive record has come through a mix of good defending and reliable goalkeeping, with the back six working in tandem perfectly to restrict their opponents. Freiburg’s Expected Goals Against of 9.72 is only the fifth-best in the league, 3.01 more than Bayern Munich (the best). But when the defence has allowed shots on goal, Freiburg have been saved by goalkeeper Mark Flekken, who has made 24 saves across the campaign, while only RB Leipzig (4.57) have prevented more goals against their xGA than Freiburg’s 3.72 in the Bundesliga.
Then there’s Wolfsburg’s attack. Despite starting the season with four straight wins, Wolfsburg weren’t piling on the goals and they have scored just nine times in their eight Bundesliga matches so far. In the Bundesliga, only five teams have managed fewer than Wolfsburg and four of those make up the league’s bottom four.
The biggest problem for Wolfsburg is that their lack of goals has come through a mixture of poor finishing and a failure to create meaningful chances. Wolfsburg’s xG of 11.74 may be the eighth-best in the Bundesliga but it is almost 14 fewer than Bayern Munich’s 25.22 and only 5.37 more than Augsburg at the bottom. They have also underperformed against their xG by 2.74, with only three teams worse than them in the Bundesliga this season.
