West Brom vs Arsenal live stream: How to watch EFL Cup online

Mikel Arteta will look to relieve some of the pressure building on his shoulders and get a first win of the season when Arsenal travel to West Bromwich Albion in the second round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday at 8pm (UK time).

The Gunners have made a dismal start to the new campaign under Arteta, losing their opening two games in all-London affairs to Brentford and Chelsea. Those results have left Arsenal pointless, goalless and 19th in the Premier League table, so a win at the Hawthorns is non-negotiable for the club’s under-fire manager.

West Brom vs Arsenal build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

The Baggies are rebuilding following their demotion to the Championship, drafting in the progressive-thinking Valerien Ismael from overachievers Barnsley, with the former Bayern Munich defender already implementing his preferred back-three system. Early signs have been promising under Ismael, but the real acid test comes now: how do the Premier League hopefuls match up against a side they will be hoping to do battle with across two fixtures next season?

For Arsenal, the landscape is slightly less optimistic. Entering the EFL Cup at this stage is unfamiliar territory for Arsenal, but with no European football to contest in this season that is exactly the predicament the Londoners find themselves in. With back-to-back losses in the Premier League and no goals to show for their efforts, Arteta simply has to win this game, if not to get the 2021/22 monkey off his back with a first win, but to at least challenge for silverware.

  • West Brom (vs Blackburn): Johnstone; O’Shea, Bartley, Clarke; Furlong, Livermore, Mowatt, Townsend; Robinson, Grant, Phillips.
  • Arsenal (vs Chelsea): Leno; Cedric, Holding, Mari, Tierney; Lokonga, Xhaka, Saka, Pepe, Smith Rowe; Martinelli.

Summer signings Aaron Ramsdale and Martin Odegaard could be given starts for the journey to the West Midlands, but the likes of Ben White, Eddie Nketiah and Thomas Partey remain out of action. There are also promising signs for Alexandre Lacazette and Gabriel, as well as Kieran Tierney who picked up a knock in the defeat to Chelsea. Willian is unlikely to feature, with the Brazilian currently  in talks over a possible move back to Brazil with Corinthians.

Players to watch: Emile Smith Rowe (Arsenal)

It has been a season of few positives so far for Arsenal but Emile Smith Rowe’s continued emergence as a potential world-beater certainly offers a crumb of comfort. It would have been hard to hand any Arsenal player a rating of five or above in their curtain-raising defeat to Brentford, but Smith Rowe easily generated a high mark, demonstrating his natural flair and eye for a killer pass in west London. Some of his touches, movement and take-ons were a sight to behold, but he was largely hamstrung by a lumbering frontline around him. Where Smith Rowe dazzled with extreme tenacity, his team-mates looked like they were trudging through treacle. If Arsenal are to turn this season around and forget about their sluggish start, then getting a frontline in sync with Smith Rowe will be crucial. The prospect of the 21-year-old linking up with the likes of Lacazette, Saka, Aubameyang and Odegaard offers hope.
