West Bromwich Albion will put their Championship promotion push to one side when they play host to Newcastle United in the FA Cup fifth-round on Tuesday night.

The Baggies currently sit first in the second-tier but Slaven Bilic will want a reaction from his players after his side suffered a lacklustre 1-0 defeat to Wigan on Saturday.

While West Brom have aspirations of going up, Newcastle are fighting to not trade places with their opponents on Tuesday, but Steve Bruce will certainly want to extend his side’s existence in this competition as well.

Ones to watch

West Brom: Conor Townsend

With Kieran Gibbs and Nathan Ferguson both out through injury, Townsend has really stepped to the fore and proven his worth at left-back for Bilic. The 26-year-old has helped to remedy the absence of his left-back competitors and will provide his manager with a serious headache when both Gibbs and Ferguson return to action.

He netted in the previous round against West Ham — which proved the winning goal — and will certainly look to cause further anguish to another Premier League club.

Key stat: No West Brom player has attempted more tackles per 90 minutes (3.1) in the Championship this season than Townsend (10+ appearances).

Newcastle: Sean Longstaff

The combative midfielder came up with the goods in the previous FA Cup outing against Oxford United and he will look to have a similar influence in this tie. The 22-year-old hasn’t quite cemented a consistent starting berth under Bruce this season, so this platform will provide the local lad with an excellent opportunity to showcase his talents and put pressure on Jonjo Shelvey, Nabil Bentaleb et al.

Key stat: Sean Longstaff boasts the best passes made per 90 minutes (41.6) of any Newcastle player in the Premier League this season (20+ appearances).

Confirmed Newcastle line-up

Squawka prediction

Both these sides may have priorities elsewhere but having reached this stage of the competition, there will certainly be a level of impetus to extend their respective runs. That considered, Bilic went with a relatively weakened side against West Ham in the previous round and having lost over the weekend to a struggling Wigan side, he may very well have one eye on Swansea this weekend, meaning Newcastle could capitalise.

Scoreline prediction: West Brom 0-1 Newcastle
