Werder Bremen will look to put a stop to their horrendous recent form when they host Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday at 2:30pm (UK time).

Florian Kohfeldt’s men have slipped to 15th in the table, only outside the relegation playoff spot on goal difference. Leverkusen, meanwhile, are sixth and well-placed to qualify for next season’s Europa League.

Werder Bremen vs Leverkusen build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

After previously looking well clear of trouble and comfortable in mid-table, Werder Bremen have lost each of their last seven Bundesliga matches, scoring just five goals during that time. As a result, Die Werderaner are hovering above the relegation playoff spot on goal difference, while they’re only a point ahead of FC Koln in the automatic drop zone. A serious turnaround in form is needed immediately if Werder are to avoid a first relegation since 1980.

Leverkusen, meanwhile, head north fresh from an impressive 3-1 win over high-flying Eintracht Frankfurt. Die Werkself are six points adrift of the Champions League spots with just three games remaining, but a more realistic goal will be holding off Borussia Monchengladbach, who sit four points below them in seventh. Given the difficult nature of the 2020/21 season, which has seen manager Peter Bosz dismissed, Europa League qualification would represent a fine achievement for Leverkusen.

  • Werder Bremen (vs RB Leipzig): Pavlenka; Gebre Selassie, Veljkovic, Moisander, Augustinsson*; Mbom*, Groß, Eggestein; Sargent, Selke, Fullkrug.
  • Leverkusen (vs Frankfurt): Hradecky; Tah, Dragovic, Tapsoba, Sinkgraven; Palacios, Demiraby; Bellarabi, Wirtz, Bailey; Schick.

Ludwig Augustinsson is struggling with a groin problem and will be assessed ahead of this match, while Marco Friedl, Omer Toprak, Nick Woltemade and Jean-Manuel Mbom are also doubts.

Lars Bender, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Lucas Alario are all injured, while Paulinho, Santiago Arias, Julian Baumgartlinger and Charles Aranguiz are all doubts.

Player to watch: Kerem Demirbay (Leverkusen)

Few players have had a bigger influence on Leverkusen’s recent results than Kerem Demirbay. The 27-year-old midfielder scored a late goal to put Frankfurt to bed in a 3-1 win last time out, while he’s also provided assists in victories over FC Koln (3-0) and Schalke (2-1) across his previous five appearances. In fact, the only two games he hasn’t scored or assisted in during that run saw Leverkusen pick up just one point, drawing 0-0 with Hoffenheim and losing 2-0 to Bayern Munich.

Demirbay is an expert passer of the ball and has already shown his ability to pick up valuable goals and assists throughout this season. He can give Leverkusen’s European hopes a real boost here, while simultaneously leaving Werder Bremen in red-hot water at the opposite end of the table.
