Watford vs Chelsea build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Claudio Ranieri’s arrival at Watford is yet to bring any real changes to the club, though they remain four points clear of the relegation zone as we start the busy Premier League festive period. In their six games under Ranieri so far, Watford have won two and lost four – almost the same record they had in their opening seven matches under Xisco (plus one draw). The victories have been emphatic, beating Everton 5-2 and Manchester United 4-1, but there were also crushing defeats to Leicester and Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Ranieri’s former club Chelsea are sitting pretty at the top of the table with 30 points from their opening 13 games, but they have seen a comfortable lead slip to just one point. The Blues have drawn two of their past three games, dropping points against Burnley and Man Utd either side of a victory over Leicester, allowing Man City to close the gap. However, they will be confident going into this fixture, especially having just been named Club of the Year at the Ballon d’Or ceremony.

  • Watford (vs Leicester City): Bachmann; Femenia, Cathcart, Troost-Ekong, Masina; Louza; Hernandez, Sissoko, Cleverley, King; Dennis.
  • Chelsea (vs Manchester United): Mendy; Chalobah, Rudiger, Silva; James, Jorginho, Loftus-Cheek, Alonso; Ziyech, Hudson-Odoi; Werner.

Watford remain without a host of players including first-choice goalkeeper Ben Foster who suffered a groin strain in training prior to last weekend’s game against Leicester. He joins the likes of Ismaila Sarr, Peter Etebo and Nicolas Nkoulou on the sidelines, while Emmanuel Dennis is a doubt. Chelsea are without Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante and Ben Chilwell, with the latter unavailable at least until 2022 with a knee injury.

Watford vs Chelsea: Five key stats

  • Watford have lost seven of their last eight Premier League meetings with Chelsea, winning the other 4-1 in February 2018. The Hornets have conceded 21 goals in these eight matches while scoring 12.
  • Chelsea have won their last two away league games against Watford but will be looking to win three consecutive matches at Vicarage Road for the first time.
  • Watford haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last 23 Premier League matches, the longest current run of any team in the division. In that run, since a 3-0 win over Liverpool in February 2020, Watford have conceded 45 goals.
  • Chelsea have won their last four Premier League away games by an aggregate score of 10-0. They last won more consecutively on the road without conceding in the Premier League between September and December 2008, a run of six under Luis Felipe Scolari’s stewardship (scoring 17).
  • Claudio Ranieri will be looking to be the first former Chelsea manager to beat the Blues with two different clubs in the Premier League. Chelsea’s current record against former bosses is currently 23 wins, eight draws and six defeats from 37 matches.
