Perfect Benfica face toughest task of season so far

The Primeira Liga’s title race is once again being dominated by the Big Three, consisting of Sporting CP, Porto and Benfica. And it’s Benfica who have got the early upper hand.

Sporting are defending champions while Porto finished second, but both have already dropped four points this season including a 1-1 draw when the pair met just after the September international break. Benfica have duly capitalised on that and, with both teams playing on Friday, currently have a one-point lead that could stretch to four with victory over Vitoria.

Benfica have been fairly faultless at both ends of the pitch, scoring the joint-most goals alongside Porto (16) and conceded the joint fewest with Sporting and Vitoria (three).

However, they won’t have it easy against Vitoria who, thanks in part to their defence, have proven themselves tough to beat. Vitoria have lost just one game in the Primeira Liga this season, their campaign opener against Portimonense. Since then, they have gone on a six-game unbeaten run across all competitions, winning two with four draws, keeping five clean sheets.

And Jorge Jesus has recognised it will be a tough fixture, telling reporters: “The hardest thing is always the next one, but Vitória is a club that, whoever plays in Guimaraes, knows the difficulties they have, for the team and fans.

“It is one of the few games where the big ones play and 90% of the fans are Vitoria. The most important thing is not the name of the opponent, but that we are focused and believe that we have the capacity to beat anyone.

“We know we’re going to have difficulties and that we’ll be down in some moments of the game, but we have to have arguments to win. We want to leave Guimaraes with a victory.”
