The second leg of the Europa League Conference playoff final takes place this weekend with Vitesse holding a slender 2-1 advantage following the first leg at GelreDome on Thursday.
AZ Alkmaar finished in fifth place in the regular Eredivisie season, some 10 points ahead of their opponents, but a disappointing loss on Thursday night leaves them with it all to do if they wish to qualify for European football next season. The side had a super season, finishing as the fourth-highest scorers overall but they were some way off fourth place, and automatic qualification to the Europa Conference League.
Vitesse ended up one place behind AZ in the league, comfortably ahead of the other sides in the top half. They were able to overcome Utrecht in the semi-final of the playoff competition, an incredible comeback in the second leg securing them a 4-3 aggregate win. Vitesse scored 22 goals less than their opponents this weekend over the course of the season but that counts for little following their victory in the first leg of this final.
This should be another close encounter with both sides desperate to taste European glory next season but AZ, having home advantage this time around as well as being so prolific in front of goal this season, should just about edge things.
